The 23-year-old, who became paraplegic due to a truck accident in 2024, is now determined to use his experiences to advocate for a more inclusive environment for individuals with disabilities.
A Life-Changing Accident
Jaiden Picot’s journey took a dramatic turn in August 2024 when he was struck by a cargo truck while riding an electric scooter. The collision resulted in a severe spinal cord injury, leaving him paralysed from the chest down. Reflecting on the life-altering event, Picot stated, “My life has been so hard ever since that day,” underscoring the challenges he has faced since his injury. Prior to the accident, he enjoyed a vibrant social life and was known for his independence, which he has fought to regain through rehabilitation.
Overcoming Obstacles
Following his injury, Picot dedicated himself to rehabilitation at Sheltering Arms Institute in Richmond, Virginia. There, he worked tirelessly to learn self-care tasks, walking with the aid of robotic exoskeletons, and mastering voice-controlled technology to enhance his daily living. His determination paid off; he completed his bachelor’s degree at Virginia Union University in the spring of 2025 and swiftly pursued an executive master’s in business administration.
On 9 May, Picot celebrated his accomplishments at his graduation ceremony, where his heartfelt moment of walking across the stage in a robotic suit captivated the audience. Supported by his two therapists, he expressed joy and disbelief at his achievement, stating, “Oh, wow – I did it,” and remarked on the transformative journey he had undertaken since his accident. The video of his graduation walk quickly gained traction on social media, prompting widespread admiration and support.
Advocating for Change
Despite his personal triumphs, Picot is acutely aware of the ongoing struggles faced by those with disabilities. He highlighted the difficulties he encounters when seeking access to public spaces, noting that even with the protections offered by the Americans With Disabilities Act, accessibility is often lacking. “I’ve learned to call ahead to restaurants and venues to ensure they have ramps and adequate space for my wheelchair,” he explained. This necessity for advance planning is a reality many wheelchair users face, and Picot aims to change that.
In addition to advocating for accessibility, Picot and his family have begun fundraising for an accessible van, which would significantly ease his mobility challenges and enhance his independence. Looking ahead, he envisions a dual career in real estate and disability advocacy. “I’m trying to reach for the stars and help us get to a point where every place has some type of accommodation for wheelchair-using people,” he asserted, determined to make a difference in his community.
