Tragic Loss in Crawford County
The body of Faith Gregory, a resident of Huzzah Creek in Crawford County, was discovered on Saturday morning, approximately 1.8 miles downstream from where her home was washed away. Gregory had been reported missing after the deluge struck the area. In a statement, the Crawford County sheriff’s office expressed profound sorrow, stating, “This is not the outcome that any of us were hoping for. Our thoughts and prayers are with Faith’s family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic loss.” Fortunately, all other individuals reported missing in the county have been accounted for, alleviating some of the anxiety gripping local communities.
Widespread Impact of Severe Weather
The National Weather Service (NWS) had issued flash flood warnings across the region as relentless thunderstorms battered the area. The severe weather system not only impacted Missouri but also extended its reach into several neighbouring states, raising concerns of widespread flash flooding and damaging winds. The NWS warned that the storms could bring additional rainfall to regions already saturated by previous downpours, which had already dumped between 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm) of rain in certain locations.

Matt Beitscher, a lead meteorologist with the NWS office in St Louis, noted, “It’s a very popular place for recreation. So there are campgrounds there. There are float trip locations there. A lot of vulnerable populations that would be susceptible to flash flooding.”

Sgt Eddie Young from the state highway patrol described the situation as dire, stating, “We are beyond thankful for your help keeping our camp community safe.” In a separate incident, campers at Bearcat Getaway campground sought refuge on a building amid rising waters, which ultimately collapsed under the strain.
The Missouri governor, Mike Kehoe, responded to the crisis by declaring a state of emergency and mobilising search and rescue teams. He reported that hundreds of individuals had been rescued from floodwaters, rooftops, and stranded vehicles.
