Preliminary investigations by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) have indicated that the elephants, which perished between 24 June and 24 July, displayed symptoms resembling poisoning, specifically signs of “partial paralysis,” possibly linked to cyanide present in agricultural pesticides. However, skepticism persists among local farmers and conservationists, raising critical questions about the circumstances surrounding these tragic events.
A Closer Look at the Deaths
The KWS reported that the elephants were found dead in the Kimana area, a pivotal corridor connecting Amboseli National Park with Tsavo National Park. This region, part of the expansive Amboseli ecosystem, is inhabited by over 2,000 elephants that migrate in search of sustenance and hydration. The local tomato farms, which thrive on irrigation from Mount Kilimanjaro, serve as a significant source of produce for markets in Nairobi and beyond.
Dr. Isaac Lekolool, the chief veterinary officer at KWS, revealed that traces of cyanide were discovered in the stomach contents of the deceased elephants. While he has not excluded the possibility of deliberate poisoning, he cautioned that it remains challenging to ascertain the exact cause. “It’s difficult to tell because we’ve not seen these kinds of cases before. It is almost like a one-off, and it was within a period of about a month,” he explained. KWS’s working hypothesis suggests that the elephants may have encountered the toxin via pesticides applied to nearby crops, potentially as a result of farmers attempting pest control measures.
The Pesticide Dilemma
A report from the Route to Food initiative in 2024 raised alarms about the use of dangerous agrochemicals in the Kimana area, highlighting a specific insecticide containing cyanide compounds. According to Wangunyu Njuguna, the report’s author, the smuggling of such hazardous substances remains rampant, even though they are illegal in Kenya. “The biggest problem is we’re not enforcing similar standards in the region,” he stated. “There’s no one checking what I go and buy across the border, so I can just go buy anything and walk through the border and no one stops me.” The prevalence of these highly toxic substances on Kenyan farms poses severe risks, not just to wildlife but also to human health, with inadequate regulatory oversight compounding the issue.
Divergent Perspectives on the Findings
Despite the KWS’s assertions, some wildlife conservationists are questioning the conclusions drawn from the initial findings. Paula Kahumbu, a leading conservationist with nearly three decades of experience working with elephants, remarked, “We haven’t got enough detailed information to have confidence in this claim that it’s due to pesticides in crops.” Other experts, preferring to remain anonymous, have expressed concerns that the pesticide theory does not align with observed elephant behaviour. Interestingly, only one of the deceased elephants was an adult male, whereas males are generally more prone to engage in risky behaviours, such as raiding farms.
Daniel Nina, a representative of local landowners, further emphasised the inconsistency of the situation. He pointed out that previous poisoning incidents have primarily affected zebras and antelopes in the same habitat, questioning why cyanide would selectively impact elephants while leaving other species unharmed. “How does cyanide kill the elephants and leave behind the zebras, antelopes, and wildebeests, which are eating the grass together?” he queried.
The Broader Context of Human-Wildlife Conflict
Human-wildlife conflict is an enduring issue in Kenya, particularly in regions bordering conservation areas. Local farmers, like Stephen Michael from Kimana, frequently experience incursions by elephants and other wildlife, leading to significant crop damage. “Elephants come from time to time from Tsavo and Amboseli. They destroy many farms, not just mine,” Michael lamented, recalling a recent incident that resulted in losses worth approximately $1,535.
Frank Pope, CEO of the conservation organisation Save the Elephants, underscored a shift in the pressures faced by Amboseli’s elephants, stating that land use has become a more pressing concern than ivory poaching. The encroachment of farms and lodges into previously wild areas intensifies competition for resources, exacerbating tensions between humans and wildlife. “People are moving into areas where there’s enough water to grow crops, and fertile soils, and those are the very areas that the elephants tend to use as well,” Pope noted.
