In an inspiring tale of life’s unpredictability, Josef Buttigieg transitioned from a university professor to a successful farmer in Lumsden, Saskatchewan. Originally from Toronto, Buttigieg moved to the province in 2017 to take up a position at the University of Regina, seeking a slower pace of life away from the bustling city. What began as a simple investment in farmland has blossomed into a thriving operation that welcomes hundreds of visitors each week.

A New Chapter in Saskatchewan

Buttigieg’s initial plan was modest; he envisioned acquiring an acreage similar to the holiday cottages many people enjoy. “I wanted to have a farm because you can do much more with a farm than you can do with a lakeside acreage,” he noted, reflecting on his aspirations. His dream started small, with a few animals and a desire to explore agrarian life. Holding a PhD in neurophysiology from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Buttigieg had little experience in farming but was eager to embrace the journey.

As he settled into his new role, the unexpected began to unfold. Friends and neighbours soon learned about his venture and expressed interest in farm-related activities. “Some people got wind that I had a farm and said, ‘Hey, can you raise some chickens?’” he recalled. This casual inquiry marked the beginning of a flourishing agricultural enterprise.

The Birth of Fenek Farm Tours

What was initially envisioned as a temporary escape turned into a vibrant community hub. In 2018, Buttigieg opened his farm for tours, starting with visits from his daughter’s friends. “I thought, ‘We’ll just do this for fun. Some gas money-slash-beer money on the side, this will be great,’” he explained. The response was overwhelming; word spread quickly, and soon throngs of people were knocking on his door, eager to experience farm life.

Initially sceptical about the demand for farm tours, Buttigieg quickly realised he had tapped into a growing interest. “All of a sudden, we had people banging down the door for that,” he remarked. The farm now attracts hundreds of visitors weekly, showcasing a diverse array of over 300 animals, including sheep, birds, rabbits, alpacas, and dogs. In addition to tours, the farm offers a petting zoo, hayrides, and special events, all highlighted on their website.

Commitment to Accessibility and Community

One of Buttigieg’s core principles is ensuring that Fenek Farm remains accessible and affordable for everyone. He emphasises fair pricing for the goods and activities available, ensuring that fun family outings are within reach for all. Notably, the hayrides are designed to be wheelchair-friendly, reflecting his commitment to inclusivity.

Raising his children in this unique environment, Buttigieg acknowledges that their upbringing differs significantly from his own. He hopes that farm life instills in them a strong work ethic and a sense of openness to new experiences. “You never know what you’re going to find when you come out to the farm,” he encourages potential visitors. “You might see a baby being born, or you might witness sheep running loose and dogs being worked.”

A Growing Community Hub

Fenek Farm has become more than just a business; it’s a community gathering place where people can reconnect with nature and learn about agriculture. As he continues to expand his offerings, Buttigieg remains focused on creating a welcoming environment for all visitors.

The success of Fenek Farm illustrates how unexpected opportunities can lead to fulfilling pursuits. By embracing his new role as a farmer, Buttigieg not only transformed his own life but also enriched the lives of those in his community.

Why it Matters

Buttigieg’s journey underscores the importance of adaptability and open-mindedness in today’s ever-changing world. His commitment to sustainability and community engagement reflects a growing trend in agriculture, where local farms play a vital role in fostering connections between people and their food sources. By sharing his experiences and opening his farm to the public, Buttigieg is not only enhancing local awareness of agricultural practices but also promoting a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Fenek Farm stands as a testament to how one individual’s unexpected path can positively impact both their life and the wider community.
