Premier Doug Ford confirmed Cho’s resignation on Friday, stating, “Earlier today, I accepted the resignation of Stan Cho from cabinet, effective immediately. He has acknowledged and taken responsibility for his mistake.” Despite his exit from the cabinet, Cho will continue to serve as the MPP for Willowdale and remains part of the Progressive Conservative caucus.
Cho’s hotel expenses were part of a broader pattern within the government, with more than a dozen members, including other cabinet ministers, charging upwards of £120,000 on hotel stays since the beginning of 2023. Hardeep Grewal, a parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Transportation, topped the list with over £27,000 in hotel charges since 2023, despite representing Brampton East, which is also near Toronto.

In his resignation letter, Cho expressed regret for his actions, stating, “Looking back now, I made a mistake. I am taking full responsibility, as I don’t want to be a distraction from our plan to grow the economy, keep families safe, and build the province.” He added that he had already repaid the expenses in full, indicating a desire to move forward.
Opposition Demands Accountability
Opposition leaders responded swiftly to Cho’s resignation. Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles remarked that Cho’s exit did not clarify how he accumulated such hefty hotel charges. “This minister was riding high, living the suite life on the taxpayer dime, and is now trying to dodge accountability because he got caught,” she asserted. Similarly, Interim Liberal Leader John Fraser warned that Cho’s case is “just the tip of the iceberg,” suggesting that further scrutiny is warranted across the cabinet.
