In a significant crackdown on fraud, Quebec provincial police have dismantled a laboratory in Montreal that specialised in producing counterfeit passports, birth certificates, driver’s licences, and other vital documents. The operation, conducted on July 8, involved collaboration with local police forces from Montreal and Gatineau, as well as experts from Quebec’s Forensic Science and Legal Medicine Laboratory.
Extensive Seizures and Arrests
Authorities reported the seizure of over 250 items associated with the production of fake documents. Among these were specialised equipment such as passport covers, templates for bank cards, laminators, and printers. In addition to the document-making apparatus, three vehicles were also confiscated during the police operation.
Captain Marie-Hélène Poulin, who leads the Economic Crimes and Cybercrime Investigation unit of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), elaborated on the lab’s extensive capabilities. The facility was capable of producing a wide array of counterfeit documents, including complete passports for countries such as Canada, France, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Italy. Furthermore, it could fabricate driver’s licences for several Canadian provinces—Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Alberta, and Saskatchewan—as well as for Florida in the United States. Other fraudulent documents included firearms acquisition permits and Quebec health insurance cards.
Legal Proceedings Underway
Following the operation, police are taking steps to recover substantial sums of money identified in a bank account linked to the counterfeit activities. One individual has been arrested in connection with the case and has since been released on bail. The suspect faces multiple charges, including forgery, possession or trafficking of counterfeit documents, and laundering proceeds of crime.
