Hungary faces a potential energy crisis as the Paks nuclear power plant, the country’s sole nuclear facility, is set to close operations for the first time due to unprecedented low water levels in the River Danube. Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced the shutdown, which comes as the river’s water has fallen to its lowest point in three decades, severely impacting the plant’s cooling systems. The National Institute of Hydrology in Romania reported that river flow measurements at the point where the Danube enters the country plummeted to less than one-third of the average for July, from 4,700 cubic metres per second to a staggering 1,600 cubic metres per second. Forecasts suggest further declines, with estimates plunging to 1,500 cubic metres per second by Tuesday.
