Europe Faces Fifth Heat Wave: A Summer of Record-Breaking Temperatures and Drought

As Europe braces for its fifth heat wave of the season, the relentless summer heat continues to raise alarms across the continent. With soaring temperatures predicted to approach 40°C (104°F) in southeastern France starting Tuesday, national weather agencies are sounding the alarm. Concurrently, an amber heat health alert will commence in the UK, where temperatures are forecast to reach 36°C (97°F) later this week. The ongoing heat crisis has not only led to unprecedented temperature records but has also triggered severe drought and catastrophic wildfires, presenting grave challenges for both human health and the environment.

A Long Hot Summer

The current heat wave is the latest in a series of extreme weather patterns that began in May. This prolonged period of high temperatures has been linked to alarming conditions, including widespread wildfires and significant agricultural challenges. In France, Météo-France reports that the heat has already caused major disruptions, and the national health agency warns of the potential for thousands of heat-related fatalities.

The European climate agency, Copernicus, has noted that this year ranks as the third hottest globally, trailing only 2024 and 2025, with the prospect of 2026 possibly breaking all records due to the combined effects of human-induced climate change and a substantial El Niño event. Such climatic shifts are expected to significantly alter weather patterns worldwide, intensifying the risks of future heat waves.

Record Temperatures and Drought

July has set a new record for average sea surface temperatures in the extrapolar oceans, reaching a staggering 20.96°C (69.73°F). This figure surpassed the previous record of 20.89°C (69.60°F) set earlier in 2023, largely attributed to El Niño’s influence. However, while sea temperatures soared, the average global surface air temperature for July was 16.90°C (62.42°F), marking it as the second warmest July on record.

In Western Europe, the June-July period saw an average temperature of 21.62°C (70.92°F), breaking the previous record set in 2022. The persistent high-pressure systems have exacerbated drought conditions, leading to soil degradation and a corresponding rise in heat retention. Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, emphasised the feedback loop of heat and drought that is becoming increasingly evident.

The Human Cost of Extreme Heat

The human toll of this extreme weather has been stark. France experienced its first-ever heat wave alerts in May, with many areas recording record high temperatures. June proved particularly deadly, with an estimated 5,700 excess deaths attributed to heat, according to France’s public health agency. The country recorded its hottest day on June 23, with temperatures peaking at 44.3°C (111.7°F) in the southwest.

As the heat intensified, wildfires erupted across southwestern France, leading to the evacuation of approximately 220,000 people—the largest such effort in Europe since World War II. In the UK, the situation is similarly dire, with drought conditions declared across half of England and all of Wales. Provisional data indicates that July was the driest month since records began in 1836, with 19 counties in England receiving no rainfall at all.

Health Risks and Tragic Losses

The ongoing heat wave poses significant risks to public health, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable populations. With the forecast of even higher temperatures, health services are bracing for increased demands, including potential rises in heat-related fatalities. The tragic loss of an 18-year-old at Camber Sands beach over the weekend highlights the dangers posed by the extreme weather, adding to the growing number of deaths associated with heat exposure in open water.
