Daily Consumption of Sugary Sodas Linked to Increased Stomach Cancer Risk, Study Finds

A recent study has revealed a concerning link between the consumption of sugar-rich soft drinks and a heightened risk of stomach cancer. Conducted by researchers at the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, the study found that individuals who consume just one sugary beverage daily are more than twice as likely to develop this deadly cancer compared to those who limit their intake to less than one a month. With the American Cancer Society projecting around 31,000 new stomach cancer cases and 10,000 associated deaths this year, these findings underscore the need for greater public awareness regarding the health risks of sugary drinks.

Research Findings

The researchers analysed health data from over 112,000 adults in the United States, aiming to fill a significant gap in understanding the dietary factors contributing to stomach cancer. According to Dr. Andrew Chan, a gastroenterologist and epidemiologist involved in the study, “Gastric cancer is the fifth-leading cause of cancer death worldwide, but we’ve known very little about how diet might contribute to this cancer.” This lack of clarity is particularly troubling given the rising consumption of sugary beverages among American adults, with approximately two-thirds reporting daily intake.

The study specifically highlights beverages containing high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)—commonly found in sodas, energy drinks, and some fruit juices—as a potential risk factor. The researchers propose that HFCS may promote fat production and increase harmful inflammation, both of which are linked to cancer development. Previous studies have also suggested that this inexpensive sweetener could indirectly stimulate cancerous growth in laboratory animals.

Stomach Cancer Risk Factors

While the connection between sugary drinks and stomach cancer is alarming, the study also points out that infection from the bacterium Helicobacter pylori remains the most significant cause of stomach cancer globally. The researchers examined a subset of nearly 1,000 participants and found some individuals tested positive for H. pylori. However, they found no direct correlation between sugary beverage consumption and the presence of this bacterium, suggesting that HFCS may be an independent risk factor.

It is important to note that the study does not establish a definitive cause-and-effect relationship. Dr. Chan cautioned, “What we did see was an association. We certainly need to do more research to understand whether this association between sugary-sweetened beverages and stomach cancer is truly causal.” The researchers’ findings, while suggestive, call for further investigation to clarify the mechanisms at play.

Broader Lifestyle Factors

The implications of this research extend beyond sugary drinks. Other dietary and lifestyle habits have also been linked to stomach cancer risk. For instance, consuming pickled foods, processed meats, and insufficient fruits has been associated with increased cancer likelihood. The American Cancer Society recommends dietary changes alongside reduced soda consumption to help mitigate these risks.

Fortunately, stomach cancer remains relatively rare in the United States, accounting for only 1.5 percent of new annual cases. However, the potential for dietary modifications to lower risk is significant and largely accessible to the general public.
