A scuba diver was taken to hospital after being bitten by a shark off Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula on Wednesday morning, prompting Plongée Percé to suspend diving activities until the season ends. The company later confirmed that the individual’s life was not in danger, but offered no details about the injuries or how the encounter unfolded.
The incident has been described as involving a great white shark, although the Canadian Coast Guard’s official rescue account referred only to a shark bite. With the diver’s identity and medical condition being treated as private, attention has now turned to the safety measures taken during the emergency and the operator’s precautionary shutdown.
Rescue teams respond after bite off Percé
The Canadian Coast Guard said maritime rescue officials were alerted shortly after 10:00 on 16 September 2026. Media Relations Officer Craig Macartney provided the following account of the response: “This morning, at approximately 10:27 EDT on September 16, 2026, the Maritime Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (Québec) was alerted that a diver from the YODA—a private vessel which is also part of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary—had been bitten by a shark,” he said. Macartney added: “Ambulance services were dispatched to tend the victim when the vessel arrived in Percé, Québec.”
