As Alberta continues to grapple with an unusual surge in mosquito populations, residents are finding themselves besieged by swarms of these persistent pests. Entomologist Ken Fry, who recently experienced the unwanted attention of mosquitoes while golfing, remarked, “I got eaten alive.” His light-hearted comment underscores a serious situation as many Albertans have struggled to escape the clutches of these bloodsuckers for weeks.

A Historic Mosquito Season

Mike Jenkins, a biological sciences technician for the City of Edmonton, noted that the current mosquito outbreak is unprecedented, reminiscent of the last major infestation in 1990. “I got so many mosquito bites. I actually got one on my tongue back then,” he recounted during a phone call. The heavy rains that have drenched Alberta since late June have created ideal breeding conditions, resulting in a mosquito boom not seen in decades.

Jenkins explained that the rainfall has been consistent, unlike recent years where dry summers kept mosquito populations in check. “There’s water in places I haven’t seen in literally decades. The mosquitoes are being produced from those habitats,” he said, highlighting the unusual climatic conditions contributing to the situation.

The Science Behind the Surge

The life cycle of mosquitoes plays a crucial role in understanding this outbreak. Fry, who teaches entomology at Olds College, explained that mosquitoes lay eggs near water bodies, and these eggs can remain dormant for up to ten years. When submerged, they hatch into larvae, which develop rapidly into adult mosquitoes within about ten days. With the recent heavy rainfall, many previously dormant eggs are now hatching, leading to a noticeable increase in mosquito numbers.

“Eggs can sense that they’re now under water and that there’s organic matter there for the larvae to feed on,” Fry elaborated. This ecological dynamic not only facilitates mosquito reproduction but also supports local bird populations that feed on mosquito larvae, creating a complex web of interactions within the ecosystem.

Community Reactions and Precautionary Measures

The influx of mosquitoes has prompted a flurry of complaints from residents, leading to a surge in demand for bug spray. Many Albertans have taken to social media platforms to share tips on where to find the elusive supplies. Meanwhile, the City of Edmonton has initiated measures to combat the mosquito population, deploying trucks to spray pesticides along roadways in an effort to mitigate the problem.

Fry has advised residents to take preventative measures, such as wearing light-coloured clothing and covering exposed skin. “Don’t look like a cow, because mosquitoes are adapted to blood feeding on deer, moose, horses, and cows,” he warned. However, he noted the challenge of striking a balance; wearing light-coloured clothing may attract females seeking nectar, complicating efforts to avoid bites.

Despite the discomfort, health officials have urged caution regarding the potential for West Nile virus, which some mosquitoes can carry. While the risk remains low, monitoring for symptoms is crucial as the mosquito population swells.
