“It was the waiting that was the hardest,” reflected Andrea Pugliese, Rick’s wife. “Would they find a match, or would they keep treating him?” Their uncertainty ended with a life-changing call: Rick’s sons were found to be a match, and youngest son Antoine stepped forward to donate his stem cells, ultimately saving his father’s life. “When the hospital called to ask if I would donate, I said yes immediately,” Antoine shared, showcasing a decision made without a second thought.
A Daughter’s Commitment to Community
For Rick’s daughter, Felicia, the experience was profoundly moving. The family’s journey through illness inspired her to give back to the community that had supported them. “We were fortunate that people had previously donated, and it saved his life,” she expressed. Her gratitude led her to organise blood drives, with the aim of ensuring that others in need could receive similar support.
Felicia’s commitment has already led to two successful blood drives, and she is currently preparing for her third event on August 29 at the Kirkland donation centre, which is celebrating five years of serving the community. “Giving blood takes just an hour of your time; donating plasma is a small gesture that can make a significant difference in the lives of the Scalzos and countless other families,” said Josée Larivée, a spokesperson for Héma-Québec.
