In the serene surroundings of Lake Summerside in south Edmonton, a Cayuga duck named Buddy has made an unexpected home. Residing by the man-made lake for the past three months, the domestic bird has captured the hearts of local residents, although his presence raises concerns for his future, especially as winter approaches.
Buddy’s Unexpected Arrival
Buddy, a robust Cayuga duck, first appeared in the Summerside neighbourhood about three months ago. Initially, residents did not think much of his arrival. “He seems pretty happy, he seems pretty healthy,” noted Kim Livingston, the office manager at the Lake Summerside Residents Association. However, a concerning incident occurred when Buddy became entangled in a fishing lure, prompting Livingston to seek assistance from Wild North, a local wildlife rescue organisation.
“After seeing the hook in his bill, I called to see if they could help,” she explained. Unfortunately, Wild North informed her that they could not assist since Buddy is a domestic duck.
Understanding Buddy’s Breed
The Cayuga duck, from which Buddy hails, was developed in New York State between the 1830s and 1850s, originating from a mix of wild black ducks and domestic breeds. Although this breed is known for its hardiness and ability to adapt to colder climates, Alberta’s harsh winters pose a significant threat to Buddy, who lacks the ability to fly.
Livingston expressed her concern: “He can’t take off from here, so he’s stuck. Not only will he not survive in the winter without shelter, but he’s also not receiving the proper nutrition from foraging in the lake.” Currently, Buddy is being fed waterfowl food three times daily, but this is only a temporary fix.
A Move to Safety
In a bid to ensure Buddy’s safety, a new owner has been found who has other ducks and geese. However, convincing Buddy to leave his current habitat is proving to be a challenge. Despite several attempts to catch him, he has consistently evaded capture. “We spent about two hours trying to catch him. He outsmarted us every time,” Livingston shared with a chuckle.
To facilitate Buddy’s transition, an expert bird catcher is scheduled to assist over the weekend. In the meantime, the residents enjoying Lake Summerside have been urged to respect Buddy’s space, as he navigates this uncertain chapter of his life.
