Shares in AbCellera Biologics Inc. surged over 30% on Monday after the Vancouver-based biotechnology firm announced encouraging results from a clinical trial of its non-hormonal treatment for moderate to severe hot flashes experienced by menopausal women. Positive Trial Results
AbCellera’s investigational drug, designated ABCL635, demonstrated remarkable efficacy during a clinical trial involving 80 participants. The trial revealed that women receiving the treatment reported significant reductions in both the frequency and intensity of hot flashes. Specifically, those on ABCL635 experienced an average 83% decrease in the number of moderate and severe hot flashes over four weeks, compared to only a 33% reduction for those receiving a placebo. Notably, 37% of participants on the active treatment reported no hot flashes whatsoever during the trial period, while 61% experienced a remarkable reduction of 90% or more.
In terms of severity, participants on the drug experienced a mean 58% reduction, in stark contrast to a mere 12% in the placebo group. Over 25% of women undergoing treatment reported complete alleviation of the severity of their hot flashes. Analyst Steve Seedhouse from Cantor Fitzgerald described the efficacy data as “practically off the chart,” and superior to existing non-hormonal therapies, such as Astellas Pharma’s Veozah and Bayer’s Lynkuet.
Stock Performance and Market Reaction
Following the announcement, AbCellera shares opened at US$9.06, marking their highest level since early 2023. This represents a significant increase from just US$2 per share 15 months ago. The stock had already seen a doubling of its value earlier this year, closing at US$6.93 on the previous Friday. The treatment, designed for self-injection once a month, provides a contrasting alternative to current hormonal therapies and other daily medications, which have been associated with adverse side effects, including liver toxicity and gastrointestinal issues. In contrast, ABCL635 has shown no major toxicity thus far, with side effects primarily limited to mild, temporary headaches and fatigue in 13% of participants. Additionally, participants noted meaningful improvements in their sleep quality during the trial.

AbCellera’s recent success comes six years after the company gained recognition for rapidly developing an antibody treatment for COVID-19, which received emergency-use authorization in both the U.S. and Canada. Partner Eli Lilly & Co. launched the treatment commercially in 2020, leading to nearly US$1 billion in royalties for AbCellera. The company went public later that year, briefly reaching a market valuation exceeding US$15 billion before experiencing a prolonged decline. However, investor sentiment has shifted positively this year following the release of encouraging safety data for ABCL635 and the completion of participant enrolment across four Canadian provinces.
Looking ahead, CEO Carl Hansen expressed optimism about the company’s future, stating their intention to introduce at least two additional drugs into clinical trials next year. “Since founding the company, our vision has been to build Canada’s first global biotech company, known for its innovation and ability to develop breakthrough medicines,” he noted during a recent conference call with analysts. “While nothing is assured, we believe we may have discovered our first major success.”
