In a closely contested race, Ahsanul Hafiz has emerged victorious in securing the Ontario Liberal Party nomination for the Scarborough Southwest riding, defeating prominent federal MP Nate Erskine-Smith by a slender margin of just 19 votes. The outcome casts uncertainty over Erskine-Smith’s aspirations to lead the provincial party, a campaign that was heavily reliant on this nomination win.

Tight Race in Scarborough

The nomination contest, held on Saturday, attracted significant attention due to its implications for the upcoming Ontario Liberal leadership race. Hafiz, who owns 30 Domino’s Pizza outlets and serves as the vice-chair of the federal Liberal Party in Ontario, triumphed over Erskine-Smith and two other candidates, marking a pivotal moment in his political career.

Following the announcement of the results, Erskine-Smith addressed reporters amidst the drizzling rain, expressing his disappointment and hinting at potential discrepancies in the voting process. “I need to have a thorough debrief with my team before deciding on the next steps,” he stated, referencing claims from scrutineers about unusual “ID issues” during the voting. He has not ruled out the possibility of contesting the results, stating he would ensure the integrity of the process was upheld.

Celebrating Victory

In contrast, Hafiz conveyed confidence in the legitimacy of the nomination process, declaring, “I cannot speak for Nate. I’m very excited. I want to share this moment with my community.” His victory is seen as a crucial stepping stone, not just for his political journey, but for the Ontario Liberals, who have struggled in the riding in recent elections. Scarborough Southwest has been a challenging territory for the party, having finished third in the last three elections.

The seat became vacant in February when former Ontario NDP deputy leader Doly Begum resigned to pursue a federal seat, which she successfully achieved in April. With Premier Doug Ford expected to call a by-election in the summer, the stakes for winning back this seat are high for the Liberals.

Controversies and Challenges

The nomination process itself was marred by accusations of misconduct. Approximately 1,800 memberships were deemed invalid due to issues such as duplication, leading Erskine-Smith’s campaign to assert that this disenfranchised a significant number of voters, particularly seniors. The Liberal Party, however, maintained that the nomination race was conducted fairly and transparently.

Hafiz faced scrutiny over past social media posts, where he posed with firearms and expressed controversial views about political figures in Bangladesh. He has since distanced himself from those views, stating they do not reflect his current beliefs or character. A Scarborough resident and international student for over two decades, Hafiz has emphasised his commitment to community development, focusing on youth employment and affordable living.

The Road Ahead

As the Ontario Liberals prepare for their leadership election on November 21, the dynamics within the party are shifting. Currently, two candidates—Dylan Marando, a former political aide, and MPP Lee Fairclough, a past hospital president—have declared their intention to run. Additionally, Rob Cerjanec, another MPP, is expected to join the race, alongside the potentially high-profile bid from former federal cabinet minister Navdeep Bains.

The Road Ahead

The nomination contest not only highlighted the ambitions of Erskine-Smith but also underscored the tensions within the Liberal Party as it grapples with its identity and strategy moving forward.

Why it Matters

Hafiz’s victory in Scarborough Southwest is more than just a personal achievement; it signifies a critical turning point for the Ontario Liberals as they seek to regain ground lost in recent years. With leadership ambitions hanging in the balance for Erskine-Smith, the party’s path to revitalisation will hinge on its ability to unite behind a candidate who can effectively challenge the current government. The outcome of this nomination could either galvanise the party’s base or exacerbate divisions, making it essential for the Liberals to address their internal challenges head-on as they prepare for the upcoming leadership race.
