Alarming Study Reveals Rising Heat Risks for Older Adults Amid Global Warming

A recent study published in *The Lancet* has revealed that the dangers posed by extreme heat to individuals aged 60 and above have been significantly underestimated. Researchers from Stanford University assessed the impact of climate change on different age groups, illustrating a dire forecast for the world’s older population as global temperatures continue to escalate. With the planet already warming by 1.19°C, the implications of a potential 1.5°C rise could be catastrophic, particularly for older adults who may struggle to cope with extreme heat.

Heat Limit Exceedance: A Growing Concern

The study highlights that around 22 per cent of older adults globally would likely encounter “frequent and widespread exceedance of heat-compensability limits” if temperatures rise by 1.5°C. This condition means that their bodies would no longer be able to manage heat effectively, leading to serious health repercussions. Currently, the average global temperature sits at approximately 1.19°C, with 2024 being recorded as the warmest year to date at 1.28°C above pre-industrial levels, according to NASA.

“As the planet warms, it becomes increasingly important to understand the specific conditions under which human heat tolerance is exceeded,” the study notes. It warns that the scale and duration of intolerable heat will grow, affecting a much larger segment of the population than previously anticipated.

Regional Vulnerabilities and Global Implications

The research underscores that India has the highest number of individuals—approximately 648.4 million—exposed to at least 180 hours of “uncompensable heat stress” annually, particularly at a 3°C rise. Other nations such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Niger also require urgent attention due to their significant exposure to extreme heat conditions.

Alarmingly, the study indicates that at least 10 million older adults, comprising over 80 per cent of their age group in certain regions, experience more than 180 hours of heat limit exceedance each year. The forecast suggests that older individuals in South Asia and the Persian Gulf may face relentless exposure to extreme heat conditions for three months straight in scenarios of 3°C warming.

With the global population of those aged 60 and older projected to double from one billion in 2020 to 2.1 billion by 2050, the study warns that this demographic will encounter “disproportionately severe and imminent risks” to their health. Notably, the majority of this population is expected to reside in low- to middle-income countries, many of which are already grappling with the impacts of extreme heat.

Historical Context and Future Risks

The *Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change* report highlights that the rate of heat-related mortality has surged by 23 per cent since the 1990s, resulting in an average of 546,000 deaths annually attributed to heat exposure. In 2024, individuals experienced an average of 16 days of hazardous heat that would not have occurred without climate change. Infants and older adults were particularly vulnerable, facing over 20 heatwave days each, marking a fourfold increase in incidents over the last two decades.

Statistics Canada estimates the Canadian population to be around 41.4 million as of April 2026, but these figures are anticipated to rise dramatically in the coming years. However, as climate conditions worsen, the health and well-being of this growing older demographic will demand urgent policy and healthcare responses.
