A recent study published in *The Lancet* has highlighted a concerning trend regarding the effects of extreme heat on older adults aged 60 and above, suggesting that the risks have been significantly underestimated. Conducted by researchers from Stanford University, the study evaluates how escalating global temperatures may undermine the health of older populations, raising alarms as the planet continues to warm.
Escalating Heat Risks for Older Adults
The analysis categorises individuals into three age groups: young adults (18–39 years), middle-aged individuals (40–59 years), and seniors (60 years and older). The findings indicate that if global temperatures rise by 1.5°C, an alarming 22 per cent of older adults worldwide could experience “frequent and widespread exceedance of heat-compensability limits”, meaning their bodies may struggle to manage extreme heat effectively.
As of now, NASA reports that the average global temperature sits at approximately 2.14°F (1.19°C) above pre-industrial levels, with 2024 projected to be the hottest year on record at 2.30°F (1.28°C). The study underscores the urgency of understanding how rising temperatures affect human tolerance to heat, with researchers stating, “Intolerable heat will be experienced at much larger scales and for longer durations, affecting far more people than previously thought.”
Global Hotspots for Heat Stress
Particularly concerning is the situation in South Asia, where India has the highest number of individuals subjected to at least 180 hours of “uncompensable heat stress” annually. At a projected 3°C increase, this figure could rise to a staggering 648.4 million people. Countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Niger are identified as areas of critical concern, exceeding established exposure thresholds.
Moreover, the study reveals that over 10 million older adults—representing a significant 80 per cent of this demographic in certain regions—experience 180 hours or more of heat limit exceedance each year. The report warns that older adults in South Asia and the Persian Gulf may soon face prolonged exposure to dangerously high temperatures for up to three months at a time.
The Growing Older Population
The study projects that the global population of individuals aged 60 and over will double from one billion in 2020 to an estimated 2.1 billion by 2050, accounting for 21 per cent of the world’s total population. As this demographic expands, so too does the risk of severe health impacts related to climate change. Alarmingly, over two-thirds of older adults are expected to reside in low- to middle-income countries, many of which are already grappling with the severe consequences of uncompensable heat.
“By overlooking the ageing population and heat vulnerability of older adults, previous projections based on limits for young adults might have seriously underestimated the frequency, geographical extent, and imminence of uncompensable heat stress with climate change,” the study cautions.
The Rising Toll of Heat-Related Mortality
The 2025 report from the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), indicates that heat-related mortality has surged by 23 per cent since the 1990s, leading to an average of 546,000 heat-related deaths annually. In 2024 alone, individuals encountered an average of 16 days of dangerous heat that would not have occurred without climate change, with infants and seniors facing over 20 heatwave days each—a fourfold increase over the past two decades.
As Canada grapples with its own demographic changes, the latest Statistics Canada report indicates a population of approximately 41.4 million as of April 2026, a decrease from earlier estimates. However, projections suggest that the population could eventually reach 76 million, although this higher estimate has been revised down from previous predictions.

As the climate continues to change, the vulnerability of older adults to extreme heat necessitates urgent action. With the ageing population expected to grow significantly, addressing these risks is essential to safeguarding public health and ensuring that effective strategies are in place to mitigate the impacts of climate change on this vulnerable demographic.
