A concerning new analysis has revealed that colorectal cancer has surpassed all other malignancies as the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among adults under 50 in the United States. This grim milestone has been reached decades earlier than the American Cancer Society’s original projection for 2040.
The study, published in the prestigious JAMA journal, shows that between 1990 and 2023, nearly 1.3 million people in the US died of cancer before the age of 50. During this period, the age-adjusted cancer death rate decreased by 44%, falling from 25.5 to 14.2 per 100,000 adults. However, this positive trend was not reflected in colorectal cancer, which saw a 1.1% annual increase in mortality from 2005 to 2023.
Researchers noted that these findings are consistent with reports of increased colorectal cancer mortality among adults younger than 50, across most racial and ethnic groups. They attribute this alarming development to the fact that most colorectal cancer patients diagnosed before the age of 50 already have advanced disease.
To address this issue, researchers have called for increased education about the unique red-flag symptoms of colorectal cancer, such as bright red blood in stool and abdominal pain. They have also recommended that screening should begin at the age of 45, rather than the current guidelines of 50.
