Alberta Faces Air Quality Crisis as Wildfire Smoke Engulfs the Province

Alberta’s weather has taken a dramatic turn this summer, with the province now grappling with the adverse effects of wildfire smoke drifting south from the Northwest Territories. As of Monday afternoon, there are currently 202 active wildfires in the N.W.T., burning through an area exceeding 777,000 hectares—an expanse greater than that of Edmonton itself. With air quality deteriorating rapidly, Edmontonians are urged to remain vigilant as the smoke persists.

Wildfire Smoke and Air Quality Concerns

As the situation escalates, Environment Canada issued an air quality warning for all regions north of Red Deer shortly before noon on Monday. Residents are cautioned that air quality and visibility conditions can fluctuate significantly within short distances and over brief time intervals. In Edmonton, the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) was projected to reach a concerning 10+ by Monday afternoon, signalling very high pollution levels.

The AQHI system categorises air quality risks: a score of 1-3 indicates low risk, while scores of 4-6 are moderate, and levels between 7-10 denote high risk. An AQHI exceeding 10 is deemed very high risk. Those particularly susceptible to the effects of wildfire smoke, such as seniors, pregnant individuals, infants, and those with pre-existing health conditions, are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activities and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms.

Protecting Yourself from Smoke Exposure

Environment Canada recommends several precautions for those affected by the smoke. When indoors, individuals should keep windows and doors shut to limit smoke infiltration. Using high-quality air filters in ventilation systems or employing certified portable air cleaners can help reduce exposure to harmful particles. However, during periods of extreme heat combined with poor air quality, maintaining a cool environment should be a priority.

Prolonged exposure to wildfire smoke poses health risks for everyone, regardless of age or pre-existing conditions. Studies indicate that even minimal smoke exposure can lead to inflammation and damage to lung tissue, with fine particulate matter (PM2.5) being particularly harmful. This pollution can penetrate deep into the lungs and subsequently enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting various bodily functions, including brain health.

Long-term Health Implications of Wildfire Smoke

Children, seniors, and individuals with chronic respiratory issues are especially vulnerable to the adverse health impacts of smoke. Research has shown that children are at increased risk, as their developing respiratory systems are more susceptible to pollution. Over time, this exposure can lead to developmental issues or conditions such as asthma.

The health risks associated with wildfire smoke extend beyond immediate symptoms. Increased hospital admissions for respiratory conditions, heart attacks, and strokes have been linked to smoke exposure. Early signs of smoke-related health issues can include itchy eyes, sore throats, coughing, nasal congestion, and headaches.

Climate Change and the Growing Threat of Wildfires

While wildfires are a natural phenomenon in the boreal forest ecosystem, climate change—exacerbated by fossil fuel consumption—has intensified their frequency and severity. A 2024 study highlighted an alarming rise in smoke-related deaths due to climate change, estimating that approximately 12,566 annual fatalities in the 2010s were linked to worsening wildfire conditions, a stark increase from just 669 in the 1960s.

To assist Canadians in tracking smoke concentrations, Environment and Climate Change Canada provides the Fire Works map, which allows for real-time monitoring of particulate levels. Following the unprecedented number of AQHI scores above 10 in 2023, Environment Canada revised its colour-coded air quality index to enhance public understanding of health risks associated with poor air quality.
