Wildfire smoke is currently blanketing the province, drifting down from the Northwest Territories, where over 200 active fires are wreaking havoc. As of late Monday afternoon, there were 202 wildfires blazing across the Northwest Territories, engulfing more than 777,000 hectares—an area larger than Edmonton itself. Most of these blazes, with the largest located near Fort Simpson, have been classified as out of control. The Fort Simpson fire, in particular, has been active since June 26, expanding to an alarming 55,403 hectares. Environment Canada wasted no time in responding to the crisis, issuing an air quality warning just before noon on Monday for all regions north of Red Deer. The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) in Edmonton is projected to reach a concerning level of 10+ by the afternoon, indicating very high pollution levels. The AQHI scale categorises air quality from low risk at 1-3 to very high risk at levels above 10, underscoring the urgency for residents to take precautions.
Individuals who may be particularly sensitive to smoke, such as those aged 65 and over, pregnant individuals, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions, are advised to limit outdoor activities and seek medical advice if they experience symptoms. Additionally, residents are urged to keep windows and doors closed and to use high-quality air filters to reduce indoor pollution.
