In an ambitious move set to revolutionise mobile connectivity, Amazon has unveiled plans for its satellite phone service, dubbed Amazon Leo, aiming for a 2028 launch. This innovative initiative will deploy a staggering 5,105 satellites in low Earth orbit, bringing direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity to users worldwide, particularly benefiting those in remote areas. Collaborations and Partnerships

To bolster its service, Amazon has forged partnerships with several telecommunications operators, including Vodafone and Herotel. This strategy will see the integration of Amazon Leo’s D2D system into existing mobile networks, effectively addressing coverage gaps and expanding reach. Additionally, a collaboration with Apple will enable satellite services for selected iPhone and Apple Watch models, enhancing features like Emergency SOS and Find My Device.

As part of its initial rollout, Amazon has already launched nearly 400 satellites as part of its broadband satellite system. Although this number pales in comparison to the more than 10,000 satellites currently active under SpaceX’s Starlink, Amazon asserts that it will deliver the fastest space internet service available, thanks to its cutting-edge antenna technology.

Overcoming Setbacks

Despite its ambitious plans, Amazon Leo faced challenges earlier this year when its New Glenn rocket experienced an explosion during a test at its Cape Canaveral launch pad. This setback has temporarily grounded the rocket, which is critical for transporting Amazon Leo satellites into orbit. However, the company remains committed to its timeline, with expectations for a limited commercial internet service to commence later this year.
