Amazon’s Texas Data Centre Project Faces Scrutiny as Potential Climate Polluter

The ambitious plans for Amazon’s data centre campus in Pecos County, Texas, have ignited concerns over environmental sustainability. An on-site natural gas power plant, integral to the project, is projected to release an astounding 33 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, which could make it the most significant single source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. This development raises questions about Amazon’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.

A Controversial Energy Source

Documents obtained by The New York Times and climate research organisation Distilled reveal that the natural gas facility could more than double the emissions of Alabama’s James H. Miller Jr. Power Plant, which currently holds the record for the highest emissions at 16 million tons per year. While the Amazon plant is still under construction and may not operate at full capacity initially, its permitted emissions are alarming.

Amazon insists that the power plant will not increase electricity costs for local residents. “Amazon believes in paying the full costs of powering our operations,” stated a company spokesperson. They further highlighted that the Pecos campus would transition to grid-connected service as timelines permit and mentioned the exploration of solar energy and battery storage opportunities on-site.

The Pecos project marks Amazon’s first substantial foray into off-grid power solutions for data centres, aligning the company with industry giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Meta, all of which have similarly invested in fossil fuel power sources this year. This trend is driven by an insatiable demand for data processing power, particularly for artificial intelligence applications, leading to a significant uptick in data centre construction across the nation.

Despite its sustainability commitments, Amazon has faced ongoing criticism for its reliance on fossil fuels. Since rolling out its climate pledge in 2019, the company’s emissions have continued to rise, prompting questions about the authenticity of its environmental initiatives. “We recognise that the path to being a more sustainable company is not a straight line,” Amazon acknowledged in its recent sustainability report for 2025.

Political Implications and Regulatory Response

The rapid expansion of data centres has provoked a backlash from both the public and politicians, focusing on issues such as environmental emissions, excessive water use, and rising electricity rates. In response to mounting concerns, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has paused new data centre projects until state electricity regulators can complete an audit of each proposal. “Simply put, Texans must come first,” he stated, highlighting the overwhelming demand these facilities place on the state’s power grid.

Currently, approximately 90 per cent of new power requests in Texas are attributed to data centres, which collectively seek a staggering 474 gigawatts of electricity—more than five times the state’s peak electricity demand. The push to expedite data centre development, including efforts to redevelop federal land for such facilities, has raised alarms about their potential to undermine global climate initiatives.
