Recent archaeological investigations have revealed a remarkable discovery just three miles from the iconic Stonehenge site: an earlier, simpler monument dating back approximately 5,000 years. This newly unearthed structure, consisting of two post holes, is believed to have aligned with the sun during the summer and winter solstices, paralleling the astronomical significance of Stonehenge itself.
A Significant Discovery
Located in the village of Bulford, the site was initially identified during ground clearance for new military housing. However, only recently has a thorough analysis been conducted to determine its astronomical alignment. The findings suggest that this ancient construction predates Stonehenge by around 500 years, indicating a continuity of ceremonial significance linked to solar events.
Phil Harding, leading the excavation for Wessex Archaeology, expressed excitement regarding the implications of the find. “Two post pits tell me much more about the people 5,000 years ago. This tells me about the whole community, their thoughts, behaviours, and reverence for the heavens,” he remarked.
The Alignment and Artefacts
The two post holes, positioned approximately 120 metres apart, once held wooden structures estimated to have stood between 2 and 4 metres high. Remarkably, these pits have been found to align precisely with the sunrise on the summer solstice, reinforcing theories that prehistoric communities possessed advanced knowledge of celestial events.
Dr Fabio Silva, an archaeoastronomer at Bournemouth University, elaborated on the alignment, stating, “To accurately establish the positioning, we needed to reconstruct the sky as it appeared 5,000 years ago. The alignment is exactly right for both summer solstice sunrise and winter solstice sunset.”
In addition to the post holes, the excavation yielded a trove of artefacts including pottery, flint tools, and animal bones. Among these items, a rare discoidal flint knife stood out. Harding noted its exceptional craftsmanship and suggested it may hold symbolic significance, possibly reflecting the community’s connection to the sun.
Insights into Neolithic Life
The evidence uncovered at Bulford provides a window into the lives of the prehistoric people who inhabited the area. Radiocarbon dating confirmed the site’s age, while the artefacts suggest that the community engaged in gatherings that likely revolved around agricultural cycles and celestial observations.
Dr Jennifer Wexler, curator of history at English Heritage, posited that the findings indicate a possible connection between the builders of this earlier structure and those who later constructed Stonehenge. “The discovery of Bulford suggests that the people involved in the initial stages of Stonehenge may have been based here or congregating seasonally for construction,” she stated.
This connection highlights the importance of solar events, particularly in the context of early agricultural societies. Wexler explained that while modern celebrations at Stonehenge focus on the summer solstice, the winter solstice held greater significance for these communities, possibly as a time to mark the return of light and the promise of agricultural renewal.
