A forgotten fossil tucked away in a Cambridge research centre for four decades has revealed itself as the first confirmed dinosaur bone ever discovered on the icy continent. The unassuming specimen, a tail vertebra from a Titanosaur—a group of gargantuan herbivores that dominated the Cretaceous epoch—was unearthed during a 1985 expedition on James Ross Island. The fossil’s journey from field site to forgotten archive began on December 9, 1985. Geologist Dr Mike Thomson, part of a British Antarctic Survey (BAS) team, unearthed the 10cm-wide bone during an expedition to the sub-Antarctic island. Initially classified as a “vertebra of large reptile” in his field notebook, the specimen was likely assumed to belong to a marine reptile, given its marine-focused research context. It was only in early 2026, when collections manager Dr Mark Evans decided to catalogue the drawer’s contents, that the fossil’s true identity emerged. “It’s only when you start thinking ‘what’s in this drawer’ that you sometimes stumble upon something extraordinary,” Evans explained. The moment he laid eyes on the bone, its distinctive shape—featuring a hollowed-out end and a rounded opposite bulge—signalled something far more significant. Titanosaurs, known for their ball-and-socket tail joints, are instantly identifiable by such features.
Unearthing a Cretaceous Giant
Prof Paul Barrett of the Natural History Museum (NHM) confirmed the fossil’s identity, calling it “a combination of features completely unique to Titanosaurs.” The bone, though modest in appearance, revealed itself to be a keystone in understanding these enigmatic giants. Titanosaurs, which include the planet’s largest land animals, were widespread during the Late Cretaceous, but their presence in Antarctica had remained speculative. This discovery marks the first definitive evidence of their existence on the continent.
Estimates suggest the dinosaur was around 7 metres (23 feet) long—smaller than the titanic 35-metre (115-foot) giants that roamed elsewhere. Barrett posits it may have been a juvenile or an atypical dwarf species, bucking trends seen in other Titanosaurs. Such anomalies could offer crucial clues about evolutionary adaptations to Antarctica’s ancient climate.

The find underscores how dynamic Earth’s climate has been. “It shows that an area we now consider uninhabitable was once teeming with life,” Barrett said. The fossil also highlights the importance of preserving scientific collections. “You never know what treasures might be hiding in plain sight,” Evans added.

The discovery, published in Acta Palaeontologica Polonica, adds a new chapter to Antarctica’s geological history. Prior to 1985, no dinosaur fossils had been found on the continent, despite its rich Cretaceous strata. Since then, only a handful of specimens have been uncovered, all from more recent expeditions. This bone, however, bridges a critical gap. Its presence suggests Titanosaurs thrived in regions now buried under ice sheets, prompting scientists to re-evaluate how these creatures adapted to fluctuating climates.
