Anthropic has unveiled its latest model, Claude Fable 5, a significant advancement in its Mythos A.I. suite, designed with enhanced safety protocols to prevent misuse in sensitive areas such as cybersecurity. The announcement, made on Tuesday, follows a previous preview that raised concerns globally due to the model’s ability to identify software vulnerabilities. This latest iteration is being promoted as the most robust model the startup has released for public use, particularly excelling in software engineering and data analytics.

Enhanced Safety Features in Fable 5

In a bid to ensure responsible use, Anthropic has implemented strict guardrails within the Fable 5 model, effectively preventing users from exploiting its capabilities for harmful purposes. Dianne Penn, the head of product management, research, and labs at Anthropic, explained the model’s limitations. “If a user, for example, requests assistance in identifying cyber vulnerabilities in a specific code, the model will decline the request and revert to Opus 4.8 for a response,” she noted. This approach aims to maintain user safety while still delivering powerful analytical tools.

Pricing and User Accessibility

While Fable 5 is set to be a higher-priced offering, preliminary feedback indicates that it operates with greater efficiency, requiring fewer tokens to complete tasks. This could lower the overall cost for users in practical applications. Customers who participated in the earlier preview of Claude Mythos—without the safety restrictions—will have the opportunity to upgrade to the new version of Claude Mythos 5. This version retains the core functionalities of Fable 5 while lifting some of the constraints in specific contexts, allowing for more flexibility.

A Strategic Move Amidst Competitive Landscape

Currently, access to Mythos 5 has been confined to approximately 200 organisations, including entities within the U.S. government through the Glasswing programme. This selective rollout follows the model’s previous achievement in identifying thousands of software flaws, a feat that has significantly contributed to Anthropic’s burgeoning reputation in the A.I. sector. The company, now valued at US$965 billion, is keen to leverage this momentum as it prepares for a potential public offering, positioning itself as a formidable competitor to OpenAI.

Anthropic has indicated plans to gradually broaden access to the Mythos range through a “systematic trusted-access programme.” As part of its pricing strategy, both models will be available at US$10 per million input tokens and US$50 per million output tokens, making it accessible for a diverse range of users.

Why it Matters

Anthropic’s introduction of Claude Fable 5 not only marks a technological leap in artificial intelligence but also reflects a growing awareness of the ethical implications inherent in this rapidly evolving field. By prioritising safety and responsible use, Anthropic is setting a standard that may influence industry practices at large. As A.I. continues to permeate various sectors, the company’s commitment to mitigating risks while enhancing functionality could play a crucial role in shaping the future landscape of artificial intelligence.
