As the countdown begins to the launch of four new stations on the West Island, residents and officials are gearing up for a significant change in local transit. Scheduled to commence on May 18, the stations at Des Sources, Fairview-Pointe-Claire, Kirkland, and l’Anse à l’Orme are set to transform how people navigate the area. However, challenges remain regarding parking and access, prompting local leaders to call for collaborative solutions.

New Stations, New Opportunities

The arrival of the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) is expected to bring enhanced connectivity to the West Island, promising easier access to downtown Montreal and beyond. For many, this represents not only a new mode of transport but also an opportunity for revitalisation within the local economy.

At Fairview, however, the situation is complicated by a lack of parking facilities for REM users, which has sparked concern among local officials. Mayor John Belvedere of Pointe-Claire expressed his frustration, noting the difficulties faced by commuters: “Right now, it’s hard to get there by car; there’s no parking. We can’t cross the Trans-Canada highway safely – there’s no overpass, there’s no bike path. It’s crucial that we work together as a community to make this initiative a success.”

While there are ongoing discussions aimed at addressing parking shortages at Fairview, a concrete agreement has yet to be reached. Belvedere highlighted that the potential for additional parking spots is under review but emphasised that any solutions would need to accommodate the commitments of Cadillac Fairview to their tenants.

Kirkland and Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue’s Perspectives

Kirkland’s Mayor Michel Gibson remains optimistic about the REM’s impact on the community, believing it will foster not only convenience for residents but also attract visitors. “It’s a welcome addition for our commercial and industrial base,” Gibson remarked. “They say it’ll be a great way to go downtown, but it’ll also be beneficial for people coming from downtown.”

In contrast, Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue is preparing for an anticipated increase in local traffic as the new stations open. Mayor Michel Boudreault acknowledged the potential challenges, particularly along the Morgan exit and Chemin Sainte-Marie. “It’s not a large road,” he noted. “We’re monitoring the situation closely and already exploring possible solutions should traffic become a concern.”

STM’s Bus Network Overhaul

In February, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) announced a major overhaul of its bus network, aimed at facilitating access to the new REM stations. This initiative is designed to encourage West Island residents to leave their cars at home in favour of public transit, thereby easing congestion and promoting a more sustainable urban environment.

This strategic move underscores the STM’s commitment to adapting public transportation to better serve the community, a sentiment echoed by local leaders who recognise the potential benefits.

Collaborative Future Ahead

The opening of the new REM stations on the West Island heralds a transformative era for public transport in the region. However, it also highlights the need for cooperation among local governments, transit authorities, and commercial interests.

As discussions continue and solutions are sought, the emphasis remains on creating a seamless integration of new transit options that will ultimately enhance the quality of life for residents while supporting local businesses.

Why it Matters

The introduction of the REM stations is not just about transportation; it represents a pivotal shift in how communities engage with urban transit. As local leaders navigate the challenges of parking and access, the collaborative efforts they undertake will determine the long-term success of this project. The REM has the potential to reshape the West Island’s economic landscape, foster sustainable transport habits, and enhance connectivity for all residents, making it a critical development for the region’s future.
