Aspect Biosystems Ltd., a pioneering firm based in Vancouver, has announced a significant boost in funding from the Canadian government aimed at enhancing its capacity to 3D print live tissue implants. The federal government is contributing £79 million towards a £280 million multiyear initiative, which promises to accelerate the company’s development of bioengineered cellular medicines targeting serious metabolic and endocrine diseases.

This latest infusion of capital comes less than two years after Ottawa provided £49 million for a previous £200 million project. That earlier funding facilitated the establishment of manufacturing facilities capable of producing materials necessary for clinical trials and advancing the company’s innovative technology. Additionally, the government of British Columbia has pledged £23.75 million to support the 2024 initiative.
Tamer Mohamed, CEO of Aspect Biosystems, highlighted the importance of governmental partnerships in achieving growth within Canada’s biopharmaceutical landscape. “We’re the only G7 country without a biopharma giant, and part of getting there is these types of partnerships with government,” he stated in an interview. Mohamed expressed his ambition to cultivate a biopharmaceutical powerhouse in Canada akin to Novo Nordisk, the Danish company renowned for its successful weight-loss medications, Ozempic and Wegovy.
Strategic Partnership with Novo Nordisk
The collaboration between Aspect and Novo Nordisk is a pivotal element of the company’s growth strategy. In 2023, Aspect secured a development agreement with Novo after the successful demonstration of its implants treating diabetes in rodent models. This partnership grants Novo exclusive rights to develop up to four products aimed at diabetes and/or obesity using Aspect’s cutting-edge technology.

The agreement is valued at up to £2.6 billion, with potential payments of up to £650 million for each product contingent on achieving development milestones, in addition to royalties from any resulting Novo product sales. Novo Nordisk has already provided £75 million upfront to support Aspect’s research and development efforts and to acquire an ownership stake in the company.
