In a gripping court case that has raised alarm about extremist networks in the UK, Mohammad Bashir, 31, an associate of the man responsible for a deadly synagogue attack in Manchester, has been implicated in a plot targeting the UK Defence Academy. Prosecutors reveal that Bashir aided Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, in conducting reconnaissance for a potential terror assault at the military facility in Swindon last August. The harrowing details of their association and plans have emerged during proceedings at Manchester Crown Court.
Reconnaissance Mission to the Defence Academy
The prosecution presented evidence that on August 14, 2025, Bashir drove Al-Shamie on a 10-hour round trip to the UK Defence Academy, located in Shrivenham, Swindon. This site serves as a crucial training ground for the British Armed Forces and hosts thousands of personnel daily. The pair was seen disposing of their mobile phones after the excursion, a move that suggests a deliberate attempt to cover their tracks.
Prosecutor Jonathan Polnay KC characterised Bashir as a “long-standing, committed jihadist,” pointing to the planning that preceded the attack carried out by Al-Shamie at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue on October 2, 2025. During this attack, Al-Shamie fatally stabbed two worshippers before he was shot dead by police.
Communication and Radicalisation
Following Al-Shamie’s arrest in February 2025 for an alleged breach of a non-molestation order and again in September 2025 on suspicion of rape, investigators uncovered a trove of messages exchanged between him and Bashir. These communications revealed a shared radical ideology, with discussions centred on violent jihad and their plans for an assault that would have national repercussions.
Bashir, a Manchester native who also holds Pakistani citizenship, has no prior criminal record. His involvement in this case marks a significant escalation in the threats posed by extremist individuals within the UK. The court heard how the pair believed they could conduct their activities without detection, as evidenced by CCTV footage from the Al-Sunnah Mosque in Cheetham Hill, where they met on multiple occasions.
The Day of Reckoning
On the day of their reconnaissance mission, Al-Shamie reportedly documented details regarding the academy’s layout on his iPhone, highlighting a specific interest in the reception area. This meticulous planning underscores the seriousness of their intentions. In the days leading up to the synagogue attack, Al-Shamie’s online searches indicated a shift in focus from the Defence Academy to potential targets in Manchester, including local rabbis and weapons.
Al-Shamie’s horrific assault at the synagogue left two men, Melvin Cravitz and Adrian Daulby, dead, while three others were injured. A stray police bullet also claimed the life of an additional victim during the chaos.
