In a quiet corner of the Blue Mountains, a 70-something woman named Carolyn was laid to rest on Friday in a coffin grown entirely from mycelium and hemp fibres — the first person in Australia to be buried in a mushroom casket, and a powerful symbol of how this nation is beginning to reckon with the staggering environmental cost of saying goodbye.
The biodegradable coffin, developed by Dutch innovators Loop Biotech, took just seven days to form in a climate-controlled mould. Once interred, it will dissolve into the earth within roughly 45 days, transforming alongside the body into nutrient-dense soil. Compare that with a traditional timber casket, which can linger in the ground for half a century or more.
A Final Act of Stewardship
Carolyn’s husband David said the choice felt unmistakably right. His wife had spent her life helping others, he explained, and even in death she could continue that mission.
“She was always there to help others. It feels very true to who she was that even after her death, she can still do something for others while giving something back to nature,” he said.
For David, the coffin was more than an eco-friendly novelty. It was a final gesture of love — one that aligned with decades of generosity. The decision has now placed Springwood Cemetery in New South Wales at the centre of a growing conversation about how Australians, and the world, choose to handle death.
The Technology Behind the Farewell
Loop Biotech founder Bob Hendrikx, whose company has already supplied thousands of the coffins across Europe and the United States, said Australia’s launch was five years in the making.

“Five years ago when I started, there was lots of interest from Australia,” Hendrikx recalled. “It was a little bit harder to ship overseas [at the time].”
The caskets weigh approximately 30 kilograms and can be lined with moss for a softer interior. The growing process itself is something close to biological alchemy: mycelium — the sprawling, invisible root network beneath fungi — binds tightly with hemp fibres inside a mould, producing a sturdy structure that is both fully natural and remarkably resilient.
Hendrikx is unequivocal about the environmental dividend. “It’s about giving back to nature: we have the mushroom, which is grown and dissolves into nature, but the actual benefit is that … it’s enriching the soil,” he said.
“The body needs to just return to nature and let nature do what it’s done best forever. If a kangaroo dies in the forest, it’s just going to be part of the cycle of life.”
It is a vision of death that feels almost agricultural — composting as continuation, soil as inheritance.
The Climate Cost of Conventional Funerals
For all the romance of a wooden casket and a polished service, the numbers are grim. Cremation, chosen by roughly 70 per cent of Australians, releases an estimated 125 kilograms of carbon dioxide per body — the equivalent of a short-haul flight. A natural burial, by contrast, emits less than 10 kilograms of CO₂ equivalent, according to PlanetMark analysis.
Australians now have access to an expanding menu of greener options. Alkaline hydrolysis — sometimes called water cremation — uses water rather than flame. Natural burials forgo embalming entirely, often employing simple cardboard coffins with rope handles. Shallow burials, too, are gaining traction.
Dr Hannah Gould, a cultural anthropologist at the University of Melbourne, believes the shift is about more than carbon accounting. It reflects something deeper about how a rapidly secularising country understands mortality.
“As people perhaps become less religious, other kinds of values or community groupings become more important, and one of those that we’ve seen is eco-death,” she said.
“This idea that perhaps that you don’t go up to heaven after you die, you return to the earth, has been an increasingly popular narrative around death and dying.”
Gould also points to a generational recalibration. With Australians living longer and increasingly dying of prolonged illnesses, many people in their 50s and 60s have already planned or attended funerals that left them cold.
“They’ve maybe seen or organised a funeral for their parents and it hasn’t gone so well,” she said. “And they’re now deciding that they want to do things differently. So we’re seeing a huge rise in funeral planning.”
That planning is increasingly environmentally motivated.
Why it Matters
Australia’s first mushroom coffin burial is more than a feel-good anecdote from the Blue Mountains — it is a frontline dispatch from a culture in transition. The funeral industry has long escaped the climate scrutiny applied to almost every other sector, yet its emissions are substantial and its pace of innovation glacial. Carolyn’s burial quietly demonstrates that meaningful alternatives already exist, that families are hungry for them, and that the act of returning to the earth need not poison it in the process. If even a fraction of Australia’s roughly 170,000 annual deaths shifted towards composting, natural burial or mushroom caskets, the cumulative climate savings would be enormous. More importantly, it would signal a national willingness to treat death not as a disposal problem, but as a final opportunity to give back.
