A delegation from several First Nations in British Columbia recently visited Ontario to investigate the potential of nuclear energy and small modular reactors (SMRs) as solutions to the province’s increasing electricity demands. With Ontario advancing plans to construct up to four SMRs, leaders from the Haisla Nation, Metlakatla First Nation, Nisga’a Nation, Halfway River First Nation, and Ts’il Kaz Koh First Nation are now contemplating whether this technology could play a role in B.C.’s energy landscape.

Seeking Alternatives for Future Energy Demands

In the face of anticipated electricity demand spikes over the next twenty years, B.C. is currently focusing on renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. However, First Nations leaders are keen on exploring a variety of options to ensure that their communities are equipped with reliable and sustainable energy solutions.

“Is it the right thing?” queried Chief Wes Sam of the Ts’il Kaz Koh First Nation. “I don’t know; I’m trying to determine that. I’m not for or against, but I like to educate myself and so does my community. Perhaps the province of B.C. should explore potential possibilities.”

The urgency for new energy solutions comes as the province embarks on significant industrial decarbonisation initiatives across northern B.C. The introduction of advanced nuclear technologies like SMRs marks a pivotal shift in the region’s energy approach, as Sam noted, “We must proactively evaluate every potential low- and zero-emission power option to sustain our economies and secure our clean energy future.”

Current Stance of the B.C. Government

Despite the interest from First Nations, the B.C. government has made it clear that nuclear energy is not part of its immediate plans. Recent calls for power proposals attracted a substantial number of applications for renewable projects, with many being led by Indigenous communities.

Moreover, there are economic concerns regarding the viability of SMRs in British Columbia. The first reactor in Ontario is still years away from completion, and experts warn that establishing a nuclear industry in Western Canada would require substantial time and financial investment. Tim Weis, senior director at the Pembina Institute, stated, “The evidence on that is pretty clear that renewables are lower cost than anything else right now… wind, solar, and batteries are the lowest-cost electricity we’ve ever seen from any technology.”

It is important to highlight that the recent trip was not intended as an endorsement of nuclear power. Instead, the aim was to gather insights on a technology that could potentially become relevant in the future, while renewable energy remains the primary focus for the present.
