The idea that adding a humble banana to a blueberry smoothie might somehow sabotage the berries’ legendary antioxidant power has sent shockwaves through health-conscious kitchens worldwide. Researchers found that participants consuming banana smoothies with added flavanols showed lower blood levels of these antioxidants compared to those drinking mixed-berry combinations. However, this research provides only a partial picture.
Dr Joe Schwarcz, a science communicator at McGill University’s Office for Science and Society, points out crucial limitations in applying these findings broadly. “The researchers never, ever made a smoothie with bananas and blueberries together,” he notes. “Furthermore, the study involved only eight subjects – hardly enough to draw significant conclusions about everyday smoothie-making.”
The study’s funding source also warrants consideration. Sponsored by Mars Company, whose portfolio includes chocolate products rich in flavanols, questions arise about potential conflicts of interest. Additionally, blueberries contain multiple types of polyphenols, with anthocyanins being far more abundant and significant than the flavanols measured in the research.
Why the Outcry Might Be Overblown
While scientific evidence does suggest that polyphenol oxidase can influence antioxidant levels in certain combinations, the practical impact remains minimal for most people. Alyssa Northrop, a registered dietitian in Minneapolis, explains that nutrient interactions in food are common – sometimes beneficial, sometimes detrimental. For instance, vitamin C enhances iron absorption, while oxalates in spinach can reduce calcium bioavailability.
However, in the broader context of overall diet and health, these interactions rarely warrant significant concern. “Rather than trying to micromanage every food combination, I encourage people to focus on the bigger picture,” Northrop advises. “Eat a varied diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and other nutrient-dense foods to meet your body’s needs.”
Indeed, the bigger nutritional concern for most people is simply not eating enough fruits and vegetables. “Most of us aren’t consuming the recommended five servings daily,” Northrop observes. “If adding a banana makes a berry smoothie more delicious and encourages someone to eat more fruit, I see that as a win.”
What the Experts Recommend
For those still hesitant about combining bananas with berries, several alternatives exist. Dr Sheri Gaw, a registered dietitian nutritionist, suggests fruits like mango or pineapple, which contain lower levels of polyphenol oxidase. Other creative substitutes for achieving smoothie thickness include oats, yogurt, silken tofu, kefir, avocado, and frozen cauliflower – all nutritious options that offer similar creamy textures.
Bananas themselves provide substantial nutritional value, containing potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, manganese, magnesium, and approximately three grams of fibre per medium fruit. Their natural sweetness and thickening properties make them a popular smoothie ingredient for good reason.
Dr Schwarcz takes a more philosophical view of the situation. “Your health is a very complex business of nutrition, of genetics, of your activity levels. And to try to make a big deal out of whether you put a banana in your smoothie or not – it’s just scientific nonsense,” he declares. “It makes no practical difference in your life.”
The Bigger Picture of Polyphenol Nutrition
While polyphenol-rich foods are linked to numerous health benefits – including cardiovascular support, healthy gut microbiome function, and chronic disease prevention – the concept of polyphenol insufficiency remains poorly understood. Unlike vitamin or mineral deficiencies, which cause distinct health problems, we don’t yet know what happens when someone doesn’t consume adequate polyphenols.
Current research suggests that consuming 400-600mg of flavanols daily from sources like green tea, cocoa, and apples may support cardiometabolic health, potentially improving blood pressure, cholesterol profiles, and blood sugar regulation. However, these guidelines are general recommendations rather than strict requirements.
Why it Matters
While this particular smoothie debate captures attention, it highlights a broader challenge in nutritional science: the tendency to oversimplify complex biological processes into catchy headlines. Understanding that nutrient interactions exist is valuable, but obsessing over single food combinations distracts from more meaningful health practices. Eating a diverse, colourful diet rich in whole fruits, vegetables, and minimally processed foods remains the cornerstone of good nutrition. Rather than eliminating beloved ingredients like bananas from our recipes, we should focus on the overall quality and variety of our dietary choices. After all, the goal isn’t perfection in every bite, but consistent nourishment that supports long-term health and wellbeing.
