In a tragic incident that has shaken the Maple Ridge community, authorities have confirmed that the bear shot following an attack on a three-year-old girl was indeed the animal responsible for the assault. The British Columbia Conservation Service initially reported a different assessment, but new evidence, including DNA analysis, has clarified the situation, providing some closure to the family affected.

The Incident Unfolds

The attack occurred on Sunday, August 9, as young Anaiyah Lekei was playing on her back deck located in the 12300 block of 240th Street. Her mother, Andrea Lekei, recounted the horrific moment when a bear lunged at her daughter. “Suddenly, she started screaming this blood-curdling scream, and my husband was able to get to the patio first,” said Lekei. In a desperate act of bravery, her husband intervened to fend off the bear, which had already inflicted multiple injuries on Anaiyah’s head, neck, and back.

The family acted quickly to stem the bleeding, with her mother and grandmother using towels in a frantic effort while her father managed to scare the bear away. In a shocking turn of events, he was eventually forced to shoot the bear with a bow and arrow to prevent further harm to his daughter.

Confirmation from Authorities

Initially, the Maple Ridge RCMP had stated that the bear shot in a neighbouring yard shortly after the attack was not the same one involved in the incident. However, following a thorough investigation, including evidence reassessment and DNA testing, the British Columbia Conservation Service announced on Facebook that it has confirmed the bear killed was indeed responsible for the attack. Sergeant Jeremy Pauls stated, “No other bears were dispatched in connection to this incident,” clarifying the situation for the community and alleviating some concerns about the presence of other potentially dangerous bears in the area.

Community Response and Concerns

The shocking nature of the attack has prompted discussions within the community about wildlife safety and bear encounters. In recent years, incidents involving bears in suburban areas have become increasingly common, raising alarms among residents and conservationists alike. Local authorities have been urged to implement measures that enhance safety and awareness, ensuring that families can enjoy outdoor spaces without fear.

The incident has also sparked conversations about the balance between human activity and wildlife habitats, particularly in regions where urban development encroaches on natural bear territories. Conservationists stress the importance of educating the public on bear behaviour and how to coexist with these majestic creatures in a way that prioritises safety for both humans and wildlife.
