Bev Craig has been elected as the new mayor of Greater Manchester, succeeding Andy Burnham, who recently transitioned to serve as the MP for Makerfield. In a tightly contested race, Craig emerged victorious against Reform UK’s Sian Astley, securing a final tally of 309,525 votes to Astley’s 157,178 after second-preference votes were counted. This significant electoral event comes on the heels of Burnham’s new role as Prime Minister, following his election victory in June.
A New Leadership Era Begins
Craig, who has been at the helm of Manchester City Council since 2021, also held the position of deputy mayor for economy, business, and inclusive growth within the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. Upon her election, she expressed a deep sense of honour and responsibility, stating, “Every single decision I take, as your Mayor of Greater Manchester, will pass the test of making your life better.”
Her vision for the city is rooted in the historical legacy of Manchester, a region that gave rise to the Suffragettes. Craig is determined to continue this legacy, asserting that Greater Manchester will once again make a transformative impact on the world.
Election Dynamics and Voter Turnout
In the initial voting round, Craig garnered 47% of the first-preference votes, while Astley trailed with 21%. With neither candidate securing a majority, the second-preference votes from eliminated candidates were reallocated, further solidifying Craig’s lead. Notably, the voter turnout was recorded at just under 25%, with over two million residents eligible to participate across the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester.
Votes revealed Craig’s strong performance, as she topped the poll in all ten local authorities. Astley managed to claim second place in eight areas, while the Green Party’s Geraldine Coggins and the Conservative candidate Phil Eckersley took second in Manchester and Trafford, respectively.
