The Toronto Blue Jays are grappling with a series of setbacks as outfielder Addison Barger joins the injured list due to elbow inflammation, just days after returning from an ankle injury. This latest blow adds to a frustrating start to the 2026 season for the team, who are already navigating a challenging landscape with a roster that has yet to field its expected lineup.

Barger’s Injury Woes

Barger, who had shown great promise last season with 21 home runs and 74 runs batted in, has struggled significantly this year, managing only one hit in 22 at-bats. His return to the field was short-lived, as he was placed on the 10-day injured list on Monday, less than 48 hours after making his comeback. Manager John Schneider noted that Barger may have been experiencing discomfort in his elbow prior to his return, which could have worsened when he made a powerful throw at 101 miles per hour to prevent Jorge Soler from scoring.

“He is disappointed, as are we,” Schneider remarked before the Blue Jays faced the Tampa Bay Rays. “For him and a lot of other guys, it has been a tough start. I don’t think I have written up a lineup all season that included all of the guys we expected.”

Roster Adjustments

In light of Barger’s injury, the Blue Jays have called up promising rookie Yohendrick Pinango from Triple-A Buffalo. Pinango stepped into the lineup, starting in left field against the Rays, marking a significant opportunity for the young player to showcase his talents during this challenging period for the team.

Roster Adjustments

In addition to Barger’s situation, Schneider provided updates on other key players. Veteran right-hander José Berríos, who has been recovering from a hairline fracture in his elbow, is set to consult with a surgeon in Dallas. Furthermore, fellow pitcher Max Scherzer is also expected to receive a cortisone injection for ongoing issues with his right thumb.

Lauer Designated for Reassignment

The Blue Jays made a notable move on Monday by designating left-handed pitcher Erik Lauer for reassignment. Lauer’s performance has been underwhelming this season, recording a 1-5 record with a 6.69 earned-run average and most recently allowing six runs in just five innings during Sunday’s loss to the Angels.

“It was a tough decision and it’s a tough business,” Schneider acknowledged. “It was a tough conversation for him and maybe caught him off guard a little bit. He was professional about it and understood. We are just trying to move in a different direction.”

Why it Matters

The challenges facing the Blue Jays this season extend beyond injuries; they highlight the importance of depth and resilience within the team. As key players struggle to stay on the field, the management’s decisions in the coming weeks will be crucial. The ability to adapt and find strength in their roster depth may well determine the trajectory of Toronto’s season. With potential stars like Pinango stepping up amidst adversity, there remains hope that the Blue Jays can turn their early struggles into a rallying cry for the remainder of the campaign.
