In a remarkable display of courage and determination, a 13-year-old boy named Austin Appelbee swam four kilometres through treacherous waters to save his family after they were swept out to sea during a holiday in Western Australia. His mother, Joanne Appelbee, described the decision to send her son on this perilous journey as one of the most challenging choices she has ever faced, highlighting the harrowing conditions they experienced during the ordeal.
A Family Day at the Beach Turns Dangerous
The Appelbee family was enjoying their holiday in Quindalup, located approximately 200 kilometres south of Perth, when a sudden change in weather turned their day of fun into a fight for survival. Initially, they were engaged in leisurely activities with inflatable paddleboards and a kayak in the calm waters of Geographe Bay. However, the situation escalated quickly as strong winds pushed them further from the shore.
Joanne recounted how the fun turned into chaos when they lost their oars and began drifting away. “It went from a bit of fun to a nightmare very fast,” she stated. Recognising the gravity of the situation, she made the difficult decision to send Austin back to shore in search of help, believing he was the strongest swimmer among them. “I knew he could do it,” she explained, but admitted grappling with the fear of sending him off alone.
A Daring Swim Against the Odds
As Austin began his arduous swim towards shore, the conditions worsened. Joanne and her younger children, Beau, 12, and Grace, 8, were left clinging to their paddleboards, struggling against rising waves and the encroaching darkness. The family lost sight of Austin, and Joanne was left to wonder about her son’s fate as time slipped away.
Austin swam tirelessly, driven by the thought of his family’s safety. After covering a distance of approximately four kilometres, he finally made it to the shore. “When I hit the floor, I thought, how am I on land right now, is this a dream?” he recalled. Without wasting any time, he sprinted 2km to locate a phone and call for emergency assistance, urgently requesting helicopters and boats.
“I was very calm about it,” he said, reflecting on the adrenaline-fueled moment. However, exhaustion soon took its toll, and he collapsed after the call. He was later taken to the hospital where he learned that his family had been rescued.
A Dramatic Rescue and Happy Reunion
Meanwhile, Joanne and the children were struggling to stay afloat as the night wore on. Joanne was consumed with fear, convinced that they had been abandoned at sea. “I had assumed Austin hadn’t made it,” she admitted, feeling increasingly hopeless as they drifted further out. The search and rescue team eventually located them approximately 14km offshore, where they found the family clinging to a paddleboard.
In a moment of joy and relief, Austin received the news of his family’s recovery shortly after his call for help. He described the overwhelming emotion he felt, saying, “Doctors and police officers were jumping up and down with joy. It was a moment I will never forget.” The family was treated for minor injuries at the hospital, and Joanne expressed her gratitude for their survival, stating, “It was an absolute perfect ending to have them all well and happy.”
Austin’s Heroism Recognised
As the dust settled on this harrowing experience, Austin has returned to school on crutches, nursing sore legs from his extraordinary swim. Despite his heroic actions, he remains humble, insisting, “I didn’t think I was a hero, I just did what I did.”
Police Inspector James Bradley commended the young boy’s bravery and the swift response from emergency services, emphasising that the incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly conditions at sea can change. “The actions of the 13-year-old boy cannot be praised highly enough. His determination and courage ultimately saved the lives of his mother and siblings,” he stated.
Why it Matters
This gripping story not only showcases the remarkable bravery of a young boy but also highlights the unpredictable nature of water activities and the potential dangers that can arise. The Appelbee family’s experience serves as a cautionary tale for holidaymakers, emphasising the importance of safety measures and preparedness when enjoying nature’s elements. Austin’s actions remind us of the strength and resilience that can emerge in dire situations, inspiring others to act courageously in the face of adversity.
