On a sun-soaked June day in Brighton, a simple outing for ice-cream transformed into an artistic revelation for local photographer Bertram Greenhough. Armed only with his iPhone 13 Pro, he immortalised a tranquil moment amidst the bustling crowds on the beach, showcasing the often-overlooked beauty of everyday life.
A Day Out in the City
Greenhough and his six-year-old daughter, Audrey, were indulging in a quintessential day out, exploring their seaside city like tourists. After visiting the quirky upside-down house near the iconic i360 observation tower, the pair headed toward the Palace Pier, with Audrey eagerly anticipating her promised treat. The beach was alive with activity, but amidst the chaos, a moment of serenity beckoned to Greenhough.
“I usually roam around Brighton with my SLR film camera—very hipster of me,” Greenhough remarked, reflecting on his preferred photography style. “But on that day, my phone was the only device I had.” He recalled the adage, “the best camera is the one you have with you,” which resonates deeply in the realm of spontaneous photography.
Capturing the Decisive Moment
As they strolled, Greenhough’s gaze landed on a lifeguard shelter, framed beautifully above the throng of beachgoers. “I pointed it out to Audrey, saying, ‘Oh, look at that, I need to take a picture!’ She had no idea what I was talking about!” he chuckled. The ephemeral nature of the scene struck him; just as he snapped the shot, the lifeguard shifted, altering the composition of the moment entirely. For Greenhough, this was nothing short of a “decisive moment,” a fleeting opportunity that he was fortunate enough to capture.
Later that evening, with the sweet satisfaction of Mr Whippy ice-cream still lingering, Greenhough turned to Lightroom to enhance the image. “I usually start with presets,” he explained. “How I perceive a scene can differ from what the camera captures, so I intensified the vibrancy of the yellows and reds and adjusted the hue of the blue sky to create harmony.”
Evoking Emotion Through Imagery
His intention with the final photograph was clear: “I hope it gives people a sense of peace and security,” he shared. Greenhough aims for viewers to share in the warmth of that sunny day, feeling the sun’s rays as they view the image. This photograph encapsulates more than just a moment in time; it embodies the joy of simple pleasures and the bond between a father and daughter enjoying their day.
Why it Matters
In an age dominated by technology and the fast-paced nature of modern life, Greenhough’s photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty that surrounds us, even in crowded spaces. It invites us to pause and appreciate the little things—a lifeguard’s watchful eye, a child’s laughter, and the warmth of the sun. This moment is not just a snapshot; it is a celebration of familial love and the art of noticing, urging us to seek beauty amid the chaos of our daily lives.
