Matthew Ashley Foster-Smith, a 46-year-old resident of Bournemouth, Dorset, is suspected of murdering 36-year-old Natalia Villalba in a Bogotá apartment on June 18. His arrest followed a series of phone calls to a British newspaper, where he claimed to have an alibi during the time of the alleged crime.
The Circumstances of the Crime
According to Colombian authorities, Foster-Smith is believed to have violently killed Villalba before attempting to hide her remains in a suitcase. The incident reportedly took place in the upscale Chico neighbourhood of Bogotá. Foster-Smith allegedly contacted The Sun on June 17, asserting he was watching an England football match at an Irish pub during the timeframe of the murder. He stated, “I was watching England versus Croatia on a big screen in an Irish bar so it wasn’t me. After the match, I went into the shopping centre, I mooched about, bought an ice cream, and came back later for the later games.”
However, the timeline of events raises questions, as the World Cup match occurred on June 17, a day before Villalba’s death.
Interpol Involvement and Arrest
The situation escalated when Colombian prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for Foster-Smith and requested an Interpol Red Notice, which alerts global law enforcement to assist in locating fugitives. Authorities in Ecuador, along with Dorset Police, played a critical role in tracking him down. Reports suggest that he was intercepted at Quito International Airport, where he was allegedly trying to purchase a ticket to Europe.
