In a curious case of domestic wildlife, Buddy, a Cayuga duck, has found himself living on the shores of Lake Summerside in south Edmonton for the past three months. While the duck appears happy and healthy, local residents are concerned for his well-being as he faces challenges that threaten his survival in the harsh Alberta winter.
A Duck Out of Place
Buddy made his unexpected arrival at Lake Summerside approximately three months ago, quickly becoming a local attraction. Kim Livingston, the office manager at the Lake Summerside Residents Association, noted, “He seems pretty happy; he seems pretty healthy. He’s a big boy.” However, Buddy’s situation took a turn when he became entangled in a fishing lure, prompting concerns for his safety.
Livingston reached out to Wild North, a local wildlife rescue organisation, for assistance, particularly because of the hook lodged in Buddy’s bill. “I called and asked Wild North if they would take him, as I was concerned about the hook in his bill,” she explained. Unfortunately, the rescue group informed her that they could not intervene due to Buddy’s status as a domestic duck.
Understanding Buddy’s Breed
Cayuga ducks are a domesticated breed that originated in New York between the 1830s and 1850s. They are known for their adaptability to colder climates, but the extreme winters of Alberta pose significant challenges for Buddy. As a domestic duck, he lacks the ability to fly, leaving him vulnerable. “He can’t take off from here, so he’s stuck,” Livingston said, expressing her concerns about Buddy’s survival without adequate shelter and nutrition.
Despite foraging in the lake, experts warn that Buddy is not receiving the proper diet essential for his health. Livingston highlighted that although Buddy is being fed waterfowl food three times a day as a temporary measure, this is insufficient for long-term well-being.
The Quest for a New Home
Fortunately, a new owner has been identified who has experience caring for ducks and geese. However, the next hurdle is persuading Buddy to leave his current habitat. Attempts to catch him have proven challenging; Livingston recounted, “We spent about two hours trying to catch him. He outsmarted us every time.”
To aid in this endeavour, a professional bird catcher is scheduled to assist in the upcoming weekend, with hopes of safely relocating Buddy to his new home, where he can thrive among other waterfowl.
