Resignation Shakes Ford’s Cabinet
Premier Ford announced Cho’s resignation on Friday, stating, “Earlier today, I accepted the resignation of Stan Cho from cabinet, effective immediately. He has acknowledged and taken responsibility for his mistake.” Cho will retain his role as the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Willowdale and remains a member of the Progressive Conservative caucus. However, the implications of his resignation resonate far beyond his individual case.
Public disclosure documents revealed that Cho was not alone in his expensive expenditures. In total, more than a dozen members of the caucus have billed taxpayers over £120,000 for hotel stays since the beginning of 2023. A Pattern of Excessive Spending
The hotel expenses in question were filed under “special circumstances,” which allows legislators residing within 50 kilometres of Queen’s Park to claim accommodation costs under certain conditions, such as severe weather or extended sittings. For instance, Hardeep Grewal, a parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Transportation, topped the list with over £27,000 in hotel charges since 2023. At a recent press conference addressing wildfires, Ford was pressed on why other MPPs involved in the scandal were not resigning. He responded by promising that all involved would repay their expenses, stating, “It’s unacceptable. It’s not how we operate. We have to be prudent fiscal managers. Stan did the right thing.”
Cho Takes Responsibility
In a heartfelt resignation letter shared on social media, Cho expressed regret over his decisions, explaining that he claimed accommodations during late legislative sessions. “Looking back now, I made a mistake. I am taking full responsibility, as I don’t want to be a distraction from our plan to grow the economy, keep families safe, and build the province,” he wrote. He also emphasised the personal toll of his political responsibilities on his family life, acknowledging that his choices might not reflect the values of his constituents.
Despite Cho’s admission, opposition leaders have maintained that his resignation does not sufficiently address the broader issue of extravagant spending within the government. Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles remarked, “This minister was riding high, living the suite life on the taxpayer dime, and is now trying to dodge accountability because he got caught.” Interim Liberal Leader John Fraser warned that Cho’s situation is “just the tip of the iceberg,” calling for a comprehensive review of all hotel expenses claimed by the government.
