Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan also addressed the safety concerns, reassuring the public that measures are being taken to ensure the area is secure. “For a downtown to thrive, people need to feel safe,” she asserted. To this end, the police launched “Operation Restore” in June, a high-visibility initiative targeting crime and social disorder hotspots around Stephen Avenue and the East Village.
Operation Restore: A Focus on Safety
Since its inception, Operation Restore has reportedly made significant strides in improving safety. McLellan shared that officers have responded to over 2,500 calls, conducted 471 business visits, and initiated nearly 700 arrest warrants. Additionally, they have connected vulnerable individuals with support services on 829 occasions. “The feedback from the community has been positive,” she added, indicating that the initiative is beginning to yield results.
The recent launch of the Stephen Avenue Safety Hub complements these efforts, providing a dedicated base for police and support agencies like Alpha House. This initiative aims to foster not only enforcement but also outreach services to assist those in need, ensuring that the revitalisation of Stephen Avenue is inclusive and comprehensive.
