In a significant development for wildlife enthusiasts and conservation advocates alike, the Wilder Institute Calgary Zoo has officially opened its new Asian Highlands exhibit. This eagerly anticipated addition, inaugurated on Wednesday morning, showcases an array of remarkable species, including snow leopards, Sichuan takins, and the beloved red pandas. The exhibit marks the first phase in a trio of expansions to the zoo’s Imagine Asia initiative.
A Tribute to Himalayan Biodiversity
Kyle Burks, the CEO of the Wilder Institute, emphasised the importance of the Himalayan ecosystems in fostering biodiversity. “The habitats of the Himalayas are among the most remote yet crucial globally,” he stated. “The animals that inhabit these regions are exceptionally adapted to thrive in their cold, high-altitude environments.” Burks pointed out that the new exhibit not only enhances the zoo’s offerings but also raises awareness regarding conservation challenges faced by these species, all within the heart of Calgary.
Both the snow leopards and red pandas previously resided at the zoo, but had to be relocated during the construction of the Asian Highlands exhibit. The snow leopards were temporarily housed at another facility, while the red pandas were moved to a different section of the Calgary Zoo.
Expansive, Naturalistic Habitats
The newly designed enclosures aim to provide animals with greater autonomy and a more naturalistic environment. “These habitats are more expansive, allowing the animals to exert more choice and control over their surroundings,” Burks explained. “For the Sichuan takins, we’ve crafted a habitat that faithfully mimics the steep, high-altitude slopes they would typically inhabit in the wild.”
Having been relocated to their new homes just days prior to the public opening, the animals have been given time to acclimatise before welcoming visitors. This careful transition underscores the zoo’s commitment to animal welfare and wellbeing.
Future Plans for Expansion
Looking ahead, the Wilder Institute Calgary Zoo aims to enhance its Imagine Asia area further with two additional exhibits, slated for completion by 2029, coinciding with the zoo’s centenary celebrations. While Burks expressed enthusiasm about future species to be introduced, he playfully refrained from divulging specifics, stating, “I hate to be cagey about it, but I’ve got to save some secrets.”
