Jen Lussier, CEO of Platform Calgary, elaborated on the city’s unique approach to technology, stating, “In Alberta and in Calgary, specifically, there’s a lot of tech that’s based on kind of our natural resources and traditional industries.” Areas such as clean energy, agriculture, and manufacturing are witnessing significant technological advancements, which are not only creating job opportunities but also transforming the local economy.

The organisation offers resources for entrepreneurs, facilitating connections and providing vital support. “We like to say it takes a village to raise a startup,” Lussier quipped, highlighting the collaborative spirit that underpins Calgary’s tech ecosystem. Lussier pointed out that the Calgary Economic Development’s innovation strategy has been instrumental in this growth. “The Calgary Economic Development innovation strategy has been put in place, and over the next three years… Platform is the critical referral engine at the middle of that,” she explained. Nathan Day, the sales and marketing head at TCG Machines, shared insights into his company’s growth trajectory, stating, “For the past six consecutive years, we have doubled in size.” From a modest beginning with just the founder, TCG Machines has expanded from 15 to 40 employees, marking a significant milestone as they recently moved into a 15,000 square-foot facility.

TCG Machines has carved out a niche in the trading card industry, achieving the impressive feat of sorting through one billion cards. Day remarked, “I mean, the proof is in the pudding, you know what I mean? We’re now in 24 countries, we have just over 500 units out in the field, this is making a real impact for people.” The company’s success stems not just from market demand but also from a commitment to enhancing the lives of local business owners.
Despite the booming job market, a notable challenge remains: the gap between job creation and educational output in Calgary. According to the CBRE report, only 3,660 graduates emerged from local post-secondary institutions with tech-related degrees. However, Day remains optimistic about attracting talent to the region. “Calgary has done an excellent job of leveraging what we already had, which was forward thinking and ambitious people,” he stated. The support from local, provincial, and federal levels has reinforced their confidence and enabled their expansion.
