This summer, California’s waters are expected to teem with juvenile great white sharks, marking one of the highest populations in years. As these young predators migrate north from warmer Mexican waters, scientists and ocean enthusiasts alike are gearing up for a season of increased shark activity along the western coastline.
A Remarkable Migration
The presence of juvenile great whites this year can be attributed largely to the El Niño climate phenomenon, which has been confirmed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) since early June. This climatic event not only warms ocean waters but also prompts significant shifts in marine life, leading to the northward movement of species that typically prefer cooler temperatures.
Dr. Chris Lowe, director of the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach, noted, “We started seeing baby white sharks in February, which we’ve never seen before. Usually that happens in April.” The unusual timing serves as a clear indicator of the dramatic changes in ocean conditions, driven by this year’s particularly strong El Niño.
Increased Encounters and Precautions
The surge in shark numbers has led to heightened interactions between humans and marine predators. Local wildlife officials are taking proactive measures to mitigate potential risks. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife recently implemented emergency regulations aimed at restricting certain types of fishing gear along beaches and piers to prevent accidental catches of white sharks, which are fully protected by law.
John Ugoretz, a programme manager at the state’s fish and wildlife department, expressed concerns about the dangers posed by modern fishing equipment. “What we’ve seen already this year is a pretty significant increase in people interacting with those white sharks in southern California,” he remarked. “That includes people fishing for white sharks.”
Despite the uptick in activity, both Ugoretz and Lowe emphasised that shark bites are exceedingly rare in California. Since 1950, fewer than 250 shark incidents have been recorded across all species, with only 17 resulting in fatalities. “These sharks are around so many people, and they recognise that we’re not prey,” Lowe explained.
Understanding Shark Behaviour
One of the key insights from recent research is that juvenile great whites tend to frequent shallower waters, where they hunt for prey such as stingrays and fish. Adult great whites, which can reach lengths of up to 20 feet, typically stay deeper in the ocean. The current conditions are not only attracting great whites but also other species like smooth hammerheads and possibly bull sharks, as warmer waters create a buffet of subtropical fish.
Lowe noted, “I expect any day we’re going to start seeing hammerheads,” signalling that this summer could yield a diverse array of shark species along the California coast.
A Shift in Public Perception
Over the years, perspectives on shark safety have evolved significantly. Lowe recalls that in the early days of his research, lifeguards often questioned the safety of swimming in waters frequented by sharks. Today, he confidently swims with these apex predators, citing extensive drone data that suggests their behaviour has shifted towards recognising humans as non-threats. “How do we explain the fact that people are around white sharks every day… and are not being bitten? They’ve learned that we’re not food,” he stated.
While caution is always warranted, the general message from experts is that beachgoers can enjoy their time in the water with a level of reassurance. As Ugoretz aptly put it, encountering a shark is akin to spotting a bear in the wild—it’s a reminder of the natural diversity that exists in the marine environment.
