California Prepares for a Shark-Inclusive Summer as Juvenile Great Whites Return

As summer approaches, California is gearing up for a wave of excitement—and trepidation—as juvenile great white sharks make a significant comeback along its picturesque coastline. With these apex predators, measuring between 6ft and 9ft, appearing in greater numbers this season, experts are urging beachgoers to embrace the presence of these remarkable creatures rather than fear them.

A Surge of Shark Activity

On 22 November 2023, a juvenile white shark was spotted swimming in the inviting waters off La Jolla, California, signalling the beginning of what experts predict will be one of the sharkiest summers in a decade. This influx of young sharks is attributed to the unusually warm waters in Mexico, which have driven them northward during a particularly potent El Niño event.

Dr Chris Lowe, director of the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach, has dedicated over two decades to studying these marine giants. He reassures the public that humans are not on the menu. “Humans don’t look like prey, they don’t sound like prey,” he states, emphasising that the sharks have evolved to avoid what they do not recognise as food.

The Safe Side of Shark Encounters

Historically, shark incidents in California are remarkably rare. Since 1950, there have only been 250 recorded shark incidents, leading to just 17 fatalities. This translates to approximately 2.5 deadly bites every decade, a statistic that remains consistent despite the growing populations of sharks off the coast.

Lowe and his team have utilised innovative research methods to understand shark behaviour around humans. They recorded various aquatic sounds made by swimmers, surfers, and kayakers, subsequently playing these back to sharks in their natural habitats. The sharks displayed little interest in the sounds generated by surfers or kayakers but did investigate the sounds produced by swimmers, likely due to the splashing caused by their movements. Ultimately, sharks would approach to a distance of about 10 feet before retreating once they realised the source was not an actual prey item.

“Our conclusion is we think sharks can actually tell the difference between people and prey,” Lowe explains. “Because we don’t smell like food, sound like food, or look like food, they don’t consider us food.”

Sharks, Species, and the Myth of the Man-Eater

The perception of sharks as mindless killing machines is misleading. California’s rise in juvenile white sharks contrasts sharply with regions like Florida, where the prevalence of shark bites is higher due to different species, such as blacktip sharks. Gavin Naylor, from the Florida Program for Shark Research at the University of Florida, notes the stark differences in shark behaviour across regions.

While Australia faces more shark-related incidents, this is largely due to the species present and their behaviour patterns. In contrast to California’s juvenile whites, the larger species in Australian waters are known for more aggressive interactions. Naylor clarifies, “The bites in Florida are from completely different species. A white shark is about as different from a blacktip shark as a kangaroo is from a dog.”

Rethinking Shark Safety

For those who frequent California’s beaches, understanding shark behaviour is crucial for ensuring safety. Lowe’s perspective has evolved over the years. “Two decades ago, I would have said any shark bigger than a person could be a potential threat,” he recalls. However, the data collected over the years—from drone footage to close encounters—has shifted his stance. “I swim with these white sharks every day and I have no qualms doing it because of the data we collected.”

This newfound confidence is grounded in scientific understanding, which shows that sharks are more curious than they are dangerous. The notion that sharks deliberately target humans is unfounded; rather, they are simply navigating their environment and learning from their interactions.
