California’s Beaches Prepare for a Surge in Young Great White Sharks: What You Need to Know

As California braces for what could be its most shark-populated summer in a decade, researchers urge beachgoers to remain calm. The arrival of juvenile great white sharks along the coastline signals a significant shift in marine activity, primarily driven by warmer ocean temperatures linked to a strong El Niño. While these apex predators are set to frequent the waters, experts assure us that humans are not on their menu.

An Influx of Juvenile Great Whites

The summer of 2026 is expected to witness a notable increase in juvenile white sharks, likely fleeing warmer waters from Mexico in search of cooler habitats along the Pacific shoreline. According to Dr Chris Lowe, director of the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach, conditions this year echo those of 2015, when a similar El Niño event resulted in a significant rise in shark sightings. During that period, researchers recorded double the usual number of white sharks, leading to the establishment of a shark nursery near Monterey Bay.

These juvenile sharks, typically measuring between 6 and 9 feet, are observed regularly migrating from Baja California up the California coast. They tend to stay near the shore, where they feed on a diet of fish, rays, and squid—a far cry from human prey.

Understanding Shark Behaviour

Despite the growing presence of sharks, incidents involving humans remain exceedingly rare. Data from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife indicates that since 1950, there have been only 250 shark bites recorded in the state, with a mere 17 resulting in fatalities. The average rate of deadly attacks has remained steady at approximately 2.5 per decade, reinforcing the narrative that sharks and humans can coexist with minimal conflict.

Dr Lowe’s extensive research into shark behaviour suggests that these creatures have become adept at distinguishing between human activity and their natural prey. In a fascinating study, researchers recorded the sounds made by various water-goers, including surfers and swimmers. When these sounds were played back to sharks, it was found that they were largely uninterested in the sounds of surfers or kayakers. However, they did exhibit curiosity towards swimmers, likely due to the distinctive splashing noises produced by arms and legs. Yet, even in these cases, the sharks typically approached only to investigate before swimming away.

“Our conclusion is that sharks can actually distinguish between people and their usual prey,” stated Dr Lowe. “Because we don’t resemble food in any way, they don’t see us as a threat.”

Comparing Shark Incidents Across Regions

While California’s shark encounters remain relatively uncommon, the same cannot be said for other regions like Florida, often regarded as the shark bite capital of the world. In 2025, Florida recorded 11 incidents of unprovoked bites, significantly higher than California’s statistics. Experts highlight that the species prevalent in these areas differ greatly. For instance, blacktip sharks are more common in Florida, whereas California’s waters are increasingly populated by young great whites.

Gavin Naylor, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research at the University of Florida, elaborates, “A white shark is about as different from a blacktip shark as a kangaroo is from a dog. You cannot compare bites in California with bites in Florida.”

Australia, too, faces its own challenges, with recent reports of shark bites linked to larger species like bull sharks. The warmer ocean temperatures have contributed to these sharks venturing closer to populated areas.

Safety in the Water: What to Keep in Mind

The perception of sharks as dangerous predators often overshadows the reality of their behaviour. Dr Lowe notes that many bites occur due to mistaken identity, particularly in regions where sharks have less exposure to human activity. He posits that white sharks may learn quickly from their interactions, leading to fewer attacks in California.

When it comes to ensuring safety while swimming or surfing, Dr Lowe’s advice has evolved over the years. Once, he cautioned against any shark larger than a person; however, with two decades of data and observation, his stance has shifted. “I swim with these white sharks every day and I have no qualms doing it because of the data we collected,” he affirms.
