In a significant move aimed at safeguarding children in the digital landscape, advocacy groups have urged the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to launch an investigation into Roblox, the immensely popular gaming platform. Concerns have been raised about the potential dangers children face, including unsolicited contact from strangers and the pressure to spend money on in-game purchases. Campaigners argue that the platform’s design features may exploit young users, leading to harmful experiences.
Concerns About In-Game Purchases and Chat Features
Roblox has become a global phenomenon, attracting millions of users, including children as young as five. However, the recent complaint submitted to the FTC highlights alarming issues surrounding the platform’s in-game economy and chat functionalities. The advocacy groups, including Fairplay and the National Centre on Sexual Exploitation, claim that Roblox employs “unfair and deceptive” practices that could endanger its young audience.
The complaint specifically addresses in-game purchases made with Roblox’s virtual currency, Robux. While the platform touts its free-to-play model, the groups argue that the system is overly complex and difficult for children to navigate. Parents have voiced their frustrations, with one mother revealing her 10-year-old daughter spent over $7,000 (£5,200) in just two months, despite attempts to set limits on spending.
Engagement Maximisation and Its Risks
Both Fairplay and the National Centre on Sexual Exploitation contend that Roblox’s design is engineered to keep children engaged for prolonged periods. Features like daily reward streaks and social comparison elements encourage users to remain active, potentially leading to excessive screen time and spending. Moreover, the complaint suggests that some games incorporate mechanics akin to gambling, such as loot boxes and chance-based rewards, which may not be fully understood by younger players.

Ashwin Verghese, communications director at Fairplay, highlighted the concerns surrounding these features, stating, “Parents are doing everything they can to protect their children on Roblox, but it’s not a fair fight.” He urged the FTC to take action, emphasising the need for a safer online environment for children.
Communication Features Under Scrutiny
Another critical aspect of the complaint focuses on Roblox’s chat systems, which include both text and voice options. The advocacy groups allege that these features expose children to inappropriate content and contact from adults. Researchers using under-13 accounts reported encountering sexual references and offensive language shortly after joining various games, raising alarms about the adequacy of existing safety measures.
The complaint also referenced troubling instances of grooming and exploitation within the platform. Despite Roblox’s efforts to implement age-based restrictions
