In a significant blunder affecting tens of thousands, Cambridge English has been fined £875,000 after erroneous results were issued for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). This miscalculation, stemming from automated marking errors, impacted 62,794 test takers predominantly between August 2023 and September 2025. Scale of the Mistake
The inaccuracies emerged during a period when over 7.7 million IELTS tests were conducted globally. Many of those affected were international students, who rely on these qualifications for educational and immigration purposes. Of the flawed assessments, 1,108 were linked to UK visa applications, with four specific cases resulting in direct impacts on visa eligibility due to incorrect scores.
Cambridge English only identified these critical errors in September 2025, prompting an immediate notification to the exams regulator, Ofqual. Since then, the organisation has rectified all affected results, with 20,600 candidates receiving upgraded scores.

Ofqual’s executive director for delivery, Amanda Swann, expressed serious concern regarding the failures, stating, “Tens of thousands of people took these tests with the expectation of accurate results which influence important decisions.” She emphasised that the fine reflects the systemic failures that occurred over an extended period, underlining the necessity of maintaining public confidence in regulated qualifications.
In response to the mishap, Cambridge English acknowledged its accountability and entered into a settlement agreement.
