Canada Approves Moderna’s Phase I Clinical Trial for Ebola Vaccine Amid Ongoing Outbreak

Health Canada has given the green light for Moderna to initiate a clinical trial for an mRNA vaccine aimed at combating the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, which is currently responsible for a significant outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This decision positions Canada as the second nation, following the United Kingdom, to authorise a Phase I trial for this particular vaccine candidate. As of now, there is no approved vaccine or treatment available for Bundibugyo virus disease.

The Phase I clinical trial will evaluate the vaccine’s ability to elicit an immune response in participants. Those involved will receive a dose of the vaccine, and researchers will monitor whether their immune systems produce antibodies specific to the Bundibugyo virus. Importantly, participants will not be exposed to the live virus itself, as confirmed by Health Canada.

This trial marks a crucial advancement in the global fight against Ebola, especially as the DRC grapples with a severe outbreak, which has recorded 3,802 cases and 1,707 fatalities as of Tuesday. The rapid spread of the virus in Eastern Congo’s remote Ituri province has raised alarm bells, prompting immediate international attention and action.

The World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern on May 17, highlighting the urgency of the situation. In response, the Canadian federal government has committed $8 million in funding to support international efforts aimed at controlling the outbreak.

As part of its preventative measures, Canada has implemented a requirement for travellers arriving from Ebola-affected regions to self-isolate for 21 days. This policy also includes a suspension of immigration applications from the DRC, South Sudan, and Uganda, effective until August 29. On average, approximately 350 individuals from these countries arrive in Canada weekly, predominantly through major airports in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.
