In a notable diplomatic visit, Canada’s Secretary of State for International Development, Randeep Sarai, travelled to Lebanon to unveil new humanitarian initiatives aimed at alleviating the suffering of those affected by the protracted conflict with Israel. With the United Nations estimating that around 360,000 individuals remain displaced due to the recent violence, Sarai emphasised the importance of Lebanese sovereignty and the need for international support in addressing the crisis.

A Call for Sovereignty

During his visit, Sarai condemned what he described as Israel’s unlawful actions in Lebanon, asserting that the country should have the autonomy to govern its own territory. “We have been working actively through diplomatic channels to halt these incursions, enabling communities to return to their homes in safety,” he stated in an interview with The Associated Press. His remarks reflect Canada’s ongoing concern regarding the escalating tensions in the region.

The current hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, which erupted after Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel on March 2, have resulted in significant casualties and destruction. With over 4,000 lives lost and widespread devastation in southern Lebanon, the conflict has led to the displacement of more than a million people, many of whom are now living in precarious conditions.

New Humanitarian Initiatives

Sarai’s visit included the announcement of three new programmes designed to support vulnerable Lebanese families and women, bringing Canada’s total aid for Lebanon this year to more than $71 million. This commitment underscores Canada’s long-standing relationship with Lebanon, particularly given the large Lebanese diaspora residing in the country.

“Over the past decade, Canada has provided approximately $800 million in assistance to Lebanon, which includes nearly $38 million allocated in March for essential resources such as food and medical services,” Sarai explained. His visit also included stops at shelters housing displaced individuals, where he witnessed firsthand the dire circumstances faced by many.

Engaging with Lebanese Leadership

In addition to announcing aid, Sarai met with President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, both of whom assumed office last year with promises to restore state authority and implement critical reforms. Lebanon is currently grappling with a severe economic crisis that has persisted since late 2019, largely driven by systemic corruption.

“There’s a lot of optimism, and I hope Lebanon will be able to deliver on these reforms,” Sarai remarked. “The world is watching closely and is supportive of this government. There is genuine hope for achieving these goals.” His comments reflect a broader desire for stability and recovery in a nation that has faced significant challenges in recent years.

Supporting Refugees and Stability

Sarai also highlighted Canada’s role in fostering a secure environment in Syria, which would facilitate the safe return of refugees. “We will do everything in our power to ensure that conditions are suitable for those who wish to go back,” he asserted. Lebanon has hosted approximately 1.5 million Syrian refugees at the height of the civil war, with many having since returned home.

As the situation evolves, it is clear that Canada is committed to supporting Lebanon and its efforts to ensure a stable and prosperous future for its people.

Why it Matters

The humanitarian crisis in Lebanon represents not only a regional issue but a global concern, as millions are affected by the fallout of conflict and economic instability. Canada’s proactive stance in providing aid and advocating for Lebanese sovereignty underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing humanitarian needs. By investing in Lebanon’s recovery and supporting its government’s reform efforts, Canada is contributing to the hope of rebuilding a nation that has endured significant hardship, thereby promoting broader regional stability.
