The Canadian national football team is gearing up for the FIFA World Cup this summer with the announcement of a 26-player roster that includes standout defender Alphonso Davies. Head coach Jesse Marsch revealed the squad on Friday after a training camp in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the excitement is palpable as the team aims to make a significant mark on the international stage.
In a remarkable show of support, giant banners featuring the squad were unveiled from the iconic CN Tower in Toronto, symbolising the pride and unity that football brings to the nation.
Roster Highlights and Key Players
“This roster reflects the diverse communities, cultures, and journeys that make up Canada,” Marsch stated in a press release. “These players are determined, fearless, and proud to wear Canada across their chest.”
Despite not attending the camp due to a hamstring injury, Davies is expected to join his teammates in Edmonton for a friendly match against Uzbekistan on Monday. However, Marsch has indicated that the influential defender may not be ready for Canada’s opening match in the tournament.
The squad includes 13 players from the previous World Cup in Qatar, such as Juventus striker Jonathan David and Hull City midfielder Liam Millar. New additions to the roster feature promising talents like goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau from Orlando City, OCG Nice defender Moïse Bombito, and Villarreal forward Tani Oluwaseyi.
A Deep and Diverse Squad
The goalkeeping department will see Crépeau joined by Owen Goodman of Crystal Palace and Dayne St. Clair from Inter Miami. The defensive line boasts an impressive array of talent, including Bombito, Derek Cornelius from Olympique de Marseille, and the aforementioned Davies, along with Luc de Fougerolles (Fulham), Alistair Johnston (Celtic), Alfie Jones (Middlesbrough), Richie Laryea (Toronto FC), Niko Sigur (Hadjuk Split), and Joel Waterman from Chicago Fire.

In the midfield, Marsch has named ten players, featuring Ali Ahmed (Norwich City), Tajon Buchanan (Villarreal), and Mathieu Choinière (Los Angeles FC), among others. The attacking front will be led by David, along with Promise David (Royale Union Saint-Gilloise), Cyle Larin (RCD Mallorca), and Oluwaseyi.
After the friendly against Uzbekistan, Canada will head to Montreal to face Ireland on June 5. Notably, players Zorhan Bassong (Sporting Kansas City), Jayden Nelson (Austin FC), and Ralph Priso (Vancouver Whitecaps) were part of the Charlotte camp but did not make the final World Cup roster.
Tournament Schedule and Expectations
Canada’s World Cup campaign kicks off against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12. The team will then shift to Vancouver for group-stage matches against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24.
The anticipation builds not just for the players but for fans across the nation, who are eager to witness Canada’s footballing journey on a global scale.
Why it Matters
The selection of this roster signifies a pivotal moment for Canadian football, showcasing the depth of talent that the country possesses. As the squad prepares for the World Cup, it represents not just a chance for glory on the pitch, but also an opportunity to unite a nation and inspire future generations of players. With Davies at the helm, Canada is poised to make its mark on the world stage, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in Canadian football.
